One way ticket:Reviews:

1.Nowrunning[2/5]:

Bibin Prabhakar's debut directorial venture Khakhi was a rather good film and showed promises of a good director. But his second film, One Way Ticket, which was an eagerly awaited film, fails to make that kind of an impact.

One Way Ticket tells the story of Kunjappu, a jeep-driver whose real name is Jahangir. He is a die-hard fan of Mammootty and is the General Secretary of the Malappuram District unit of the Mammootty Fans' Association. His family consists of his mother and three sisters, two of whom are married. They want to see him married and so a marriage-broker named Beeran is entrusted with the job of finding a match for Kunjappu.

Working as a cleaner on Kunjappu's jeep, is Chandran, who is the treasurer of the Mammootty Fans Association. Kunjappu has an uncle who has always kept himself at a distance from Kunjappu and his family. He has a young daughter called Sajira. To irritate this vile uncle, Kunjappu always goes about saying that he would marry only Sajira. The uncle takes it seriously and to prevent this from happening, he helps Beeran find more and more girls for Kunjappu, but he rejects all the proposals brought by Beeran.

In the meantime Kunjappu goes to attend a wedding and there he sees a girl singing the Oppana. He gets attracted to the girl and makes inquiries about her. He learns that the girl's name is Raziya and after getting the address and other details, he tells his family that he is in love with Raziya, and that he intends to marry her. His uncle learns about this from Beeran and is happy. Preparations for the marriage begin. And then one day Kunjappu goes to Raziya's college to meet her. And there he learns that it is not Raziya that he has been seeking to find. The girl that he had fallen for was some other person, whose name was Sunanda.

Now it so happens that Sunanda has an uncle named Karunakaran Ezhuthachchan. He and his son Sasi intend to grab Sunanda's property and assets. What all happens after this forms the rest of the plot.

Prithviraj's performance as Kunjappu is good, though not extraordinary. Bhama as Sunanda doesn't have much to do. Mammootty, who appears as himself in a few scenes, is his very usual self and is quite cool. Jaffer Idukki as Chandran, Salim Kumar as Beeran and Jagathy Sreekumar as Kunjappu's uncle fit well into their respective roles. Jagadeesh delivers a very good performance as Salahuddin, who is the accountant-cum-driver of Kunjappu's uncle. Classmates fame Radhika cuts a poor figure as Sajira, a character that has been rather poorly etched out.

It's really sad to see that director Bibin Prabhakar and scenarist Babu Janardhanan couldn't manage to etch out a more meaty role for a veteran actor like Thilakan, who elicits quite a few boos (maybe for the first time in his long acting career) playing the character of Karunakaran Ezhuthachchan. And this when the role would have suited the calibre of someone as versatile as Thilakan. Nishant Sagar as Sasi does nothing noteworthy.

There is nothing much to mention about the technical aspects of the film. Two of the three songs in the film seem out of place, while the Oppana song "En khalbile...", penned by actress Kavya Madhavan, is good. The main problem with One Way Ticket is that it bases itself on a weak plot. The script, penned by Babu Janardhanan (who has scripted many good films in the past), leaves much to be desired. The first half of the film is watchable, but post-interval it just drags on, with nothing much to say. To sum up, One Way Ticket falls far below expectations.

2.Nowrunning[1.5/5]:

One Way Ticket is nothing more than a series of flat jokes stringed together on a clumsy cord. It fiercely struggles to be both naughty and nice, and is effectively neither.

Kunjappu (Prithviraj) is the leader of the Mammootty Fans Association at Malappuram, who would very easily give up his life for the actor. Besides watching Mammootty films, Kunjappu drives an auto rickshaw for a living, and pretends to be in love with his cousin Sajira (Radhika), merely to irk her dad Hajiyar (Jagathy Sreekumar). Love strikes when he bumps into Sunanda (Bhama) at a marriage, and Kunjappu takes upon himself the arduous task of rescuing his lady love from her tormentors - her ominous uncle Ezhuthachan (Thilakan) and his wayward son Sasi (Nishanth Sagar).

One way ticket is an exercise in emptiness; there's practically nothing happening here. I suppose it has endorsed itself as a comedy, and yet offers very few giggles and even fewer chuckles. The way those gags have been forcefully woven into the narrative makes you whimper and whine instead. I couldn't help but wonder as to whether Fans' Association meetings actually discussed issues as petty and paltry as the ones depicted in One Way Ticket. For sure, they can't be! This obsession with insignificance is what mars the film's chances.

Prithviraj has been bestowed a vibrant 'Voice of the Youth' honor, we realize as the initial titles roll. I wouldn't disagree, for the man is honesty and sincerity personified. He dances like a dream and carries out his stunts in style. There's nothing backing him here; neither a story nor a script, and yet he gives it his all. Thilakan is back after a hiatus, and it's a disgrace that we get to see him in a role that could have been donned by any other junior artiste. The sinister background score that props up when we get to see the actor, embarrassingly reminiscent of those 80's action flicks, is awkward to say the least. With a pair of dark glasses on, we never get to see his eyes in this film, and the few scenes that he graces are left without a cause or result whatsoever.

And there's Mammootty playing himself and even letting us sneak a quick look on his forthcoming flick, Parunthu. He looks as impressive as ever and majestically tides over the triviality associated with the scenes. It has to be admitted that those are the only instances of spontaneity that you would get to see in the film, while the rest of it is a hollow and real gaudy affair that has lots of style and very little stuff.

One Way Ticket is a comedy that is as lame in its narration as in its implementation. There is non-stop outrageousness going on, and almost all of it, though inoffensive, is in fact pretty boring. Half the time, it has no idea as to where it's headed, which is what makes it two-faced and tedious in ways its makers seem completely ignorant of.

This ill-conceived and half-baked attempt at humor is not a side-splitter by any means. Filled with plastic emotions and wrapped up by dry wit, One Way Ticket squanders an excellent cast and some tremendous promise on a frail structure.

3.Rediff[2/5]:

Old wine in new bottle:

We can see the desperation in Prithviraj to secure his place in Malayalam cinema while watching his latest film One Way Ticket [with the tagline: Story of a Mammootty fan] directed by Bipin Prabhakar.

The director has earlier given us Khakhee, a police story-cum-family drama starring Prithviraj and Mukesh as brothers. This film written by Babu Janardhanan is a package to exhibit Prithviraj's range as an actor, which he does with elan. After establishing that our hero is really a Mammootty fan in the first half hour, the story moves forward on a predictable trajectory.

Kunjappu [Pithviraj] is the General Secretary of Mammotty Fans Association in Malappuram. His job is to ferry school children in his jeep, which he accquired through sheer hard work. Being our typical hero, he'd sacrificed his education after standard 10 [in spite of being a topper in his school] to look after his mother and siblings. His cousin Sajira [Radhika] is in love with him but he pretends to reciprocate her feelings just to tease his uncle played by Jagathy Sreekumar.

There are a number of elements seen here which we have seen hundreds of times in Malayalam films. There is a heroine Sunanda [Bhama], who fears for her life after her greedy uncle Ezhuthachan [Thilakan] leaves no stone unturned to grab his niece's wealth. Which brings our man into the picture. He reluctantly takes on the responsibility of being her saviour, which leads to romance.

The most important thing is that Kunjappu gets a couple of opportunities to threaten the Circle Inspector, that too inside the police station.

The overall treatment of this film leaves a niggling feeling that it may have been inspired by Meesamadhavan and Rasikan.

However, the brightest moments of this film is when Mammootty [playing himself] makes an appearance a couple of times [it may prove to be a good omen for the film if we go by the history where megastar has appeared as himself].

Prithviraj's performance sprinkled with humour works in his favour. He gets ample support from Idduki Jaffer [who plays his assistant Chandaran], Jagathy Sreekumar and Salim Kumar.

The leading ladies Bhama and Radhika, however do not have much to do except look charming.

If the team behind One Way Ticket is lucky, they may taste success at the box office. But, it would be good for Prithviraj if he can motivate the team behind the camera to give him something novel instead of reworking decade-old themes.

4.Indiaglitz:

One Way Ticket - An average fare with a cold ‘finale'
IndiaGlitz [Saturday, June 21, 2008]

Fans associations had been always crucial in ensuring an awesome opening for those movies, which star their favorite on screen demigods. Especially in Mollywood, stars and their fans share an unique and interesting relationship .What director Bibin Prabhakar was trying to explore through his movie ‘One Way Ticket' was this interesting relationship between a superstar and his fan, which ultimately results in the star making some important amendments in the life of his fan. But mishmash in plot points, the culmination to the story and the note on which the film ends mars the impact of the film completely, making it an average fare.

The movie has Prithviraj as Jehangir, the district president of Mammootty fans association. Popularly called by the name Kunjapoo, he is the third rank holder in Plus two examinations. He was forced to become a taxi jeep driver, due to the dismal financial conditions of his family consisting of three sisters and widowed mother, for whom he was the only savior. Kunjappoo had made it a point to harass his uncle Bava Haji, by projecting stories about his love with Bava Haji's daughter Sajira and spreading false stories about his plans to marry her. But Haji is hell bend on bringing up some proposal to keep Kunjappo away from his daughter. His trusted aides broker Sakath Beeran (Salim Kumar) and Kanakkapillai Salahudeen (Jagadheesh) is always up to something in this direction.

Kunjapoo accidentally falls for a girl, who comes for an 'Oppana' dance at one of his friend's marriage. Mislead about her as ‘Rasiya’, he tries to track her whereabouts. This news comes as a big relief to Bava Haji, who immediately reaches Rasiya’s house and officially announce her relation with Kunjapoo and plans for the marriage. But later Kunjappo realizes that it was another girl named Sunanda (Bhama) whom he mistook as Rasiya, while agreeing for the marriage. Kunjappoo turns away from the deal and Bava Haji is now forced to marry off his only son with Rasiya.

Sunanda on the other hand, has her share of problems. His venomous uncle Karunakaran Ezhuttachan (Thilakan) is hatching plans to get her agree to marry his widower son (Nishanth Sagar), and thus seize her huge family fortune. Even though Kunjappoo and Sunanda part ways initially, they cross each other's path at regular intervals, try to find solace in others' arms.

And ultimately Kunjapoo is destined to become the savior of the girl, whose father has already been murdered and her mother, at the verge of another fatal disease. How Kunjaapoo works out plans to save her with the help of the real superstar, whom he admires, forms the plot the film. The film has a freeflow till the half way with rollicking comedy from Jagathy, Salimkumar and Jaffer Idukki. But thereafter the story comes to a screeching halt and starts focusing on the romantic side than the story of fanships and ends up without fireworks as an ordinary fare.

The second hour drags and the climax would've been better, realistic to be precise. The final reels has been extremely pathetic with wayward screenplay coupled with plastic performances .The poor treatment of the script in the final reels, written without any attention to details ruins the chances of an other wise safer movie. A fine-tuned performance from Prithviraj saves the film from becoming a much bigger dud. He plays his part, particularly the lighter comic sequences with amazing timing and ease.

In fact, the actor has graduated to a natural actor to the core, handling the most complex scenes with flourish. The other silver lining in the film is the presence of Mammootty who does an eventful cameo, which couldn't raise the expected applause. Bhama, as the love interest, has some significance in the beginning, but she is totally lost by the end of the film. Thilakan as Bhama's uncle fails to evoke the necessary villainy, with the director trying to dismantle the flashback sequences and present the story only through dialogues. Jagathy Sreekumar essays Radhika's father, Bava Hajyar to perfection. Salim Kumar, Jagadheesh and Jaffer Idukki handle the comic department proficiently

But the technical side remains average with even cinematographer Vipin Mohan’s work, so tailor-made with old fashioned wide shots. The background score by Raja Mani is jarring. Except for a couple of songs including the oppana song, the music by Raahul Raj is not up to mark. Ranjan Abraham also fails to sustain the interest, with the needed sharp cuts in the later half.

‘One Way Ticket’ is too ordinary a ticket for a fare that doesn’t leave any impression whatsoever. On the whole, it meets the expectations partly. At the box-office too, the film will end up as an average earner .See it once, if you have the time and inclination.

'He is king!':Joshi About Mammootty

'He is king'!

Director Joshi is to commercial cinema what Adoor Gopalakrishnan is to
art films.

If Adoor is responsible for Mammootty's transformation into a super
actor, Joshi can be credited with making him a superstar.

Listen to the man who has directed Mammootty in the maximum number of
films:

Joshi I first met Mammootty when he was dubbing for P G
Vishwambharan' s film, Sphotanam. We met outside the dubbing studio --
our conversation didn't go beyond hello.

Our first film happened at the end of 1982 -- two years after he
started acting. It was producer Joy Thomas who booked him for my film.
Till then, I was directing established actors like Prem Naseer,
Sathyan, Madhu, Soman, Sukumaran, etc.

Almost all my films were hits those days. By then my contemporaries, I
V Sasi and P G Vishwambharan, had worked with Mammootty. As we were
discussing our new project, Joy said, "This time, we will have a new
face: Mammootty." I agreed.
Before I started shooting Raathri, many people warned me that
Mammootty was arrogant, obstinate and conceited. That he would not
obey directors. But I decided to go ahead with the project anyway.

That was a time when Mammootty was extremely busy. He would four
shifts a day. Almost all Malayalam films had him in the cast. In the
day, he would work three shifts for three films. Then we would meet at
10 pm and shoot till 2 am!

The first day, I remember, he reached by 10 pm. I started explaining
the sequence to him. Halfway through it, I realised he had closed his
eyes, appearing the least interested in what I was saying.

I got so wild that I called for pack-up and walked out of the sets.

Then I issued an ultimatum to the producer: "It's either him or me. If
he is going to be the hero, I will not be the director."

Actually, what happened was that Mammootty was so tired that he fell
asleep as I was narrating the sequence. I didn't know it then. All I
remembered was what others had told me -- he was arrogant.

Anyway, the situation was diffused after Mammootty came to my room and
explained everything. He said, "Sir, please forgive me. I had not
slept for five days. That is why I fell asleep."

I believed him. That very moment, I went back to the sets. We resumed
shooting.

If he hadn't come to my room, we would never have come together at
all. I think that was a major turning point in our careers.

THE second time he worked with me was as a guest, in a film that had
all the major stars in it. I insisted that I wanted him to act in it
-- he agreed readily even though he was heavily booked. I still
remember waiting for him from 6 pm till 12 am. Imagine, just a few
months ago, I was so mad at him that I wanted him off my film!

By then, we had worked in about half a dozen films together. Our
equation hadn't changed from 'director and hero'. But it in 1984,
during Sandarbham, that a strong friendship started developing between us.

We began opening up and confiding in each other. Soon, there was
nothing we didn't tell each other. Today, 30 films later, we remain
very good friends.

I have worked with him for 18 years, but I can't explain how Mammootty
has grown as an actor over the years. I can best explain it this way:
In 1986, all his films flopped miserably. Everybody wrote him off.
Many predicted that Mammootty's days as hero were over, and that
hitherto, he would get only supporting roles.

We had worked in four films that year -- all flopped. It was one of
his worst years. Why, youngsters wouldn't go near the theatre if they
found it was his film! The moment he appeared on screen, they used to
hoot.

That was also the time Mammootty, Baby Shalini and the briefcase were
a common factor in all Malayalam films. I had started the trend, but
every filmmaker in Kerala followed suit: Mammootty, Baby Shalini and
the briefcase!

You won't believe it. That Onam, there were five of his films. One was
mine. All but one film by I V Sasi bombed miserably.

In the history of Malayalam cinema, no one has come back as hero after
he was down and out. All that awaited a fallen hero was character
roles. Mammootty himself was ready for that.

But it was not to be. Mammootty rewrote history.

In 1987, we started shooting for New Delhi. Since 1987, he moved in
one direction only: up. He hasn't looked back since. I would say it
was all because of his hard work and his self-confidence.

Not only commercial success, but awards, too, came in search of him. A
hero, who everyone in Kerala wrote off as history, became one of the
most recognised actors in India!

I remember he was under tremendous tension during New Delhi. He went
through each scene as if he were possessed. It was like he was driven
to prove everyone wrong. After each sequence, he would tell me: "Let
me put in my best. After that, it is up to the people to accept or
reject me. But I will do my best. I shouldn't feel later that I didn't
give my best to them."

We were in Kashmir shooting for Nair Saab, when news of New Delhi's
success reached us. I think that was the happiest day in his life. I
doubt if he were as happy winning the National Awards!

It was a kind of rebirth for him.

AS an actor, Mammootty fits into different roles so beautifully. Very
few have that ability.

He transformed himself completely as Chandu in Vadakkan Veera Gadha.
We feel he is Chandu, not Mammootty. As Ambedkar, he is Ambedkar, not
Mammootty. Can anyone believe that Ponthanmada is Mammootty? That is,
indeed, an unusual ability.

Let me tell you something about New Delhi. I made the same film with
Jeetendra in Hindi, with Krishnam Raju in Telugu and with Ambareesh in
Kannada. Only after I saw these actors play GK (Mammootty's
character), did I understand what a great actor he is.

That was when I realised the greatness of Mammootty the actor.

He becomes lame in the movie -- and you should see the way he walked!
Not once in the entire film will you see him walking differently. But
I had to struggle really hard to make the other actors limp. When I
was working with Mammootty, I didn't have to even think of all these
things. He is the best artiste any director can have.

You can never say that an actor has reached his peak. There is no peak
in acting. Acting changes with time. The kind of acting we saw from
Naseer Sir and Sathyan Sir was totally different from what we see in
today's actors.

Mammootty is changing with the times. He is growing with the times.
That is why he is the king even after 20 years.

Mammootty, taking new challenges

Mammootty is an actor who always likes to experiment with himself.
He is very much excited about his new challenging role in his next
film, Kuttisranku. Internationally acclaimed director Shaji N Karun is
teaming up with Mammootty for the first time.

Shaji's Piravi and Vanaprastham attracted international audience and
he is hoping the same with his new venture. According to Mammootty,
this is one of the best challenging roles in his career. It's
basically the story of three women living in different places and the
three different approaches by the actor towards these women.

According to Shaji, the film will be shot in 3 schedules in Kerala. If
all goes well, it will have an international premiere at Cannes Film
Festival next year. One of the big news is action sequences are
handled by one of the Japanese firms who used to work with Jackie Chan
films.

Reliance Big Entertainment of Anil Dhirubhai Ambani is entering into
Malayalam cine field with this great project. The shooting will be

Mammootty, Shaji Karun team up for their first film

Thiruvananthapuram, June 8 (IANS) Veteran Malayalam superstar Mammootty, who is on a roll with all his releases this year becoming super hits, is upbeat about his latest film "Kutti Srank" with award winning director Shaji N. Karun, shooting for which will begin June 15.

This is the first time the two acclaimed veterans of the Malayalam film industry will be teaming together.

Shaji began his career as a cinematographer and later turned to direction, with his first film "Piravi" that was released in 1989 winning him the prestigious Camera d'Or-Mention d'honneur at the Cannes Film Festival.

Since then, every film of Shaji has attracted international attention.

"Kutti Srank" that translates into boat driver has Mammooty playing the lead role. It unfolds through the impressions three women living on different islands form of him when he arrives to deliver supplies.

Mammooty, in turn, reacts differently to what the three women have to say about him.

"I am really excited because I will be playing three different characters but not three different roles," Mammootty told IANS.

"It is going to be a challenge for me because the basic nature of all the three characters is the same but there are different behavioural patterns and mannerisms based on what the three women say," he added.

The storyline of the film, Shaji's fifth, is being kept under wraps. It is scheduled for an international premier at next year's Cannes Film Festival.

The names of the female leads have also not been revealed beyond that one will be a Sri Lankan and the other a Bengali actress, while the third is still under consideration.

The film will be shot in three schedules, all of them along the Kerala coast.

Anjali, who has been working with acclaimed cinematographer Santosh Sivan, will crank the camera for the film, while its fight sequences will be staged by a Japanese firm that handles the action sequences for Jackie Chan films.

"Kutti Srank" will also mark the maiden entry of Reliance Big Entertainment into the Malayalam film industry.

Now it's time for 'Guest' wars

Now it's time for 'Guest' wars IndiaGlitz [Monday, June 09, 2008] With Malayalam cinema becoming more and more a two- men based industry, the two superstars and their popularity is souring higher than ever in Mollywood. The only films that are bound to assure any decent opening seems to be theirs, who can even raise the entire amount spent on production from the advances given by theatre owners.
The year has already completed three seasons when the Superstars of Malayalam cinema Mammootty and Mohanlal came up with each of their films, to compete with each other. The first was the Christmas fight between 'Katha Parayumbol' and 'Flash'. And then we had witnessed the same week release of 'Roudram' and ‘College Kumaran'.
And for this vishu season, we had ‘Annan Thampi’ and ‘Innathe Chintha Vishayam’, coming up into release stations in a gap of six days. The year seems to be the best one for Mammootty and in the first two races, his films ‘Katha Parayumpol' and 'Roudram' made knockout victories while Flash and college Kumaran sank without trace.
And his Vishu Film ‘Annan Thampi' has emerged a blockbuster, though ‘Innathe Chintha Vishayam' also made a safe run, becoming a mentionable hit of the year.
Now the third weekend of June will witness the releases of ‘Mizhikal Sakshi' and 'One Way Ticket' in adjacent days. The first film will feature Mohanlal in a cameo as the son of Kuniyamma, the lead character played by Sukumari while the later with Prithviraj as the hero will have Mammootty playing himself.
‘One Way Ticket' will get into theatres on June 19 while 'Mizhikal Sakshi' is planned to be on screens by June 20. The first one is a thorough commercial fare while ‘Mizhikal Sakshi' is based on a hard hitting story about the love of a mother for her long lost son.
Let's see what will be the mass verdict, on this monsoon fight for commercial success, and how far the cameos from the superstars help the movies to march on a success path

Mammootty (born Pannaparambil Muhammad Kutty on September 7, 1953 [1]) is an award winning, popular, Malayalee Indian film actor. He, along with Kamal Haasan, holds the record of winning the National Film Award for Best Actor most times. During a career that spanned more than quarter of a century, he has acted in more than 300 films as lead actor in Malayalam movies, a distinction he shares with Prem Nazir.[2]Mammootty is considered by many critics to be one of the finest actors in Indian cinema who has excelled in both art and commercial movies.[3]

Acting career

Early career, 1971-1980

Mammootty's first screen appearance was in a movie called Anubhavangal Paalichakal in 1971, directed by K. S. Sethumadhavan and starred by Sathyan and Prem Nazir. He was still a student at Maharajas College at that time. After two years, in 1973, he got another role in Kalachakram, a Prem Nazir movie directed by K. Narayanan.

But his professional movie career began in 1979, when he played his first leading role in Devalokam.[9] directed by vetaran M. T. Vasudevan Nair. However, this was not released in theaters.

Breakthrough, 1980s

Vilkanundu Swapnangal, penned by M. T. Vasudevan Nair and directed by M. Azad was Mammootty's first released film where he played the role of "Madhavan Kutty". His roles in further movies like Mela where he played a Circus artist, and Thrishna , directed by I.V. Sasi got him noticed. His first superhit film as a hero was Thrishna, released in 1981. After the success of Thrishna, Mammootty and I.V. Sasi together created many hits such as Aavanazhi and Inspector Balram in the later years of his career.

The role of Sub-inspector Jacob Eerally in the investigative thriller Yavanika, directed by K. G. George, released in 1982 cemented his position as a leading hero in Malayalam cinema. The movie was a big commercial success and Mammootty's role got rave reviews for its style and dialogue delivery. This was the beginning of a trend whereby Mammootty would play the role of tough cop in many action and investigative thrillers in the coming years.[10]

In 1981, he got his first award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Ahimsa.

New realms of stardom

The period 1982-1984 saw Mammootty evolve into a commercially viable hero in mainstream Malayalam cinema. Padmarajan’s Koodevide and Joshy’s Aa Raathri were highly successful at the box office. His performances in movies like Aalkootathil Thaniye and Adiyozhukkukal, scripted by M.T.Vasudevan Nair established him as an actor of substance. Mammooty was noted for his controlled acting, never crossing the limits, and his presentation of M. T.’s dialogues, which were always pregnant with meaning.[11].

In a period of five years from 1982 to 1986 Mammootty acted in more than 150 films as hero.[12] During this period, Mammooty managed the rare distinction of appearing as hero in an astonishing 35 movies released in a single year, 1986, which exceeded only by Prem Nazir who acted in 39 movies as hero released during 1979.

His role as Karunan in Adiyozhukkukal directed by I.V. Sasi, penned by M. T. got him the Best Actor State Award and Filmfare Award . Mammootty won the State special jury award and best actor Filmfare award for Yathra directed by Balu Mahendra. The film proved to be one of the best in Mammootty's career. He shaved his hair for the film. In 1985, his role as Ravi Varma in Nirakkoottu, directed by Joshy, penned by Dennis Joseph got much acclaims and also created box office history.

Career slump, 1986s

For a short while during mid 80's, Mammooty saw his career in a decline. Many of his movies during this period saw him portraying very stereotypical roles as a familyman or a businessman.

Regaining stardom, 1987s

Mammootty made an enormous comeback with New Delhi and Thaniyavarthanam, both released in 1987. New Delhi was a very important movie in his life as an actor.[13] The film was loosely based on the novel, "The Almighty" by Irving Wallace.[14] His portrayal of a victimized journalist, who systematically took revenge on politicians who flattered him, was noticed and well accepted by the masses. Mammootty's portrayal of the role was widely appreciated and it reinstated his stardom and propelled him to mega-stardom.[citation needed]New Delhi went on to create box-office history in Kerala and it was later remade into many other Indian languages. Meanwhile, his role as “Balan Mash” in Thaniyavarthanam got him very critical acclaims. The film was a story about a school teacher who was made into a mental patient by unfortunate circumstances. The movie was made by the pair of writers A. K. Lohithadas and director Sibi Malayil.

Era of superhits, 1987-1996

In 1988 Mammootty delivered one of the biggest hits in the history of Malayalm Cinema with his Oru CBI Diary Kurippu. Oru CBI Diary Kurippu went on to create box-office history in Kerala as well as in Tamil Nadu. The film ran over 200 days in Madras Sapphire Theaters.[citation needed] Mammootty's role as a CBI officer in the above movie got him critical acclaim. Following the success of the first CBI film Oru CBI Diary Kurippu, three more murder mystery sequels were produced with the same cast of characters: Jagratha (1989), Sethurama Iyer CBI (2004) and Nerariyan C.B.I (2005), all directed by K Madhu, penned by S.N. Swamy with Mammootty as Sethurama Iyer, an intelligent but unassuming CBI officer. All CBI films were super hits at box-office.[citation needed] He was a regular in movies of Harikumar, Mohan, P.G. Viswambaran, Sajan and Jeassy etc. The movies by M.T. Vasudevan Nair and Padmarajan, arguably among the best of Malayalam writer-directors, widened Mammootty's acting horizon. Two of M.T. Vasudevan Nair’s films with autobiographical elements were acted by Mammootty. One was Aksharangal directed by I.V. Sasi and the other was Sukrutham directed by Harikumar.

Mammootty touched the pinnacle of his career in Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha (roughly translated as 'A northern heroic folklore'); the film was directed by T.Hariharan and penned by M.T.Vasudevan Nair. His depiction of a Chekavan (warrior) of distinguished valor but vilified by circumstances won him the top honors of the country, National Film Award for Best Actor. Along with the huge commercial success of the movie, Mammooty was given rave reviews about his lead role in the movie, which required heavy physical and phsychological preparations. Mammootty's performance in Mathilukal directed by Adoor Gopalakrishnan was also considered for the award. His role as a hunter Varunni in Mrugaya, directed by I.V. Sasi, and another film Mahayanam, was also scanned for the State Award. Mammootty won the Filmfare award for Amaram directed by Bharathan. He played the role of an uneducated fisherman who dreams of making his only daughter a doctor.

During this time, Mammootty appeared in many of the films directed by Adoor Gopalakrishnan's. He starred in three of his movies, Anantharam ('Thenceforth'), Mathilukal ('Walls') and Vidheyan ('The Servile'). His portrayal of the protagonist in Mathilukal (based on 'Mathilukal', a novel by the ace Malayalam novelist Vaikom Muhammad Basheer) was instrumental in getting him his first National Film Award for Best Actor. Mammootty also portrayed the roles in Adoor Gopalakrishnan's Vidheyan and TV Chandran's Ponthan Mada. He received the National Film Award for Best Actor and State Award for his fulfillment of the roles in both films. His performance in Valtsalyam directed by Cochin Haneefa was also considered for the State Award. The King, scripted by Renji Panikkar, was released in 1995 and was directed by Shaji Kailas. Mammootty played the central character as a District collector and it turned out to be the biggest hit of the year. His performance as 'Thevalliparambil Joseph Alex' was much appreciated as one of the most powerful characters in his career.[citation needed] Mammootty won his third National Film Award for Best Actor for Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar directed by Jabbar Patel and also obtained international fame. His performance in Ambedkar.[15] was much appreciated all across the world.[citation needed]

In 2001-2002 period, Mammootty’s career again slumped in Malayalam cinema Industry. During the period, none of his films did well at box-office and he had taken a long break also. But again Mammootty had made an astonishing come back with Chronic Bachelor and Sethurama Iyer CBI during 2004-2005. Sethurama Iyer CBI, was the third film in a series of films starring Mammootty as 'Sethurama Iyer', a sharp and highly intelligent investigative officer of the CBI. The first two movies were Oru CBI Diary Kurippu (1988) and Jagratha (1989). Released in [[January 23, 2004]], the movie became a strutting hit. It broke collection records and became the biggest hit of 2004. After the huge success of Sethurama Iyer CBI, it was Kaazhcha, a realistic portrayal of a Social issues with a razor sharp script and the extraordinary performance of Mammootty makes this film a visual treat. A film filled with visuals of the rustic Kerala and its inhabitants. The simple lives and the social consciousness that an ordinary Keralite has, is brought out well in this film. Mammootty won the State Best Actor Award for his effective performance as 'Operator Madhavan'. The film Kazhcha did well at box-office too. 2004, 2005 in all sense, it was Mammootty’s years and his career graph raised spectacularly after the release of Rajamanikyam directed by debutant Anwar Rasheed. Released during Ramadan 2005, the movie became a swashbuckling hit. It broke all collection records and became the biggest hit of 2005. Rajamanikyam was also touted as the biggest hit of all time ever produced in the Malayalam cinema.[16]

His Karutha Pakshikal, Palunku and Kaiyoppu are well-made, touching films that are rather slow- paced, realistic and shorn of all glamour and glitter, essential factors in a commercial venture. His performances in these films got much appreciation by critics. For Mammootty, the year 2007 started with the big hit Mayavi. Then followed a stylish hitBig B, .His Mission 90 Days Failed in BO and Ore Kadal which earned good revenue and also won many accoclades for his performance as Dr. Nathan, one of his best characters. His latest release, Nasrani, directed by Joshy, is average success at the box office... His latest relase 'Kadha parayumbol' with Sreenivasan and Mukesh already emerged as the X mas winner...The film sold for a record remake rights in 5 different languages ...His next relase 'Raudram' directed by acclaimed script director Ranji Panikar...His character will present the star again in the role of a cop for the 25 th time in his career. His most awaited film Pazhassi Raja, directed by T. Hariharan and penned by M. T. Vasudevan Nair will hit theatres in April, 2008.[17].

Beyond boundaries

Mammootty had crossed the boundaries of Malayalam cinema and acted in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and English films. in 1989, he made his Tamil debut in Maunam Sammatham, directed by K. Madhu and Hindi debut in Thriyathri. He has acted in Tamil films with front-line directors of the industry like K. Balachander and Mani Ratnam. His performance along with Tamil Superstar Rajinikanth in Thalapathi made him a favorite in Tamil. His other Tamil film Kandukondain Kandukondain directed by Rajiv Menon was also a superhit; co-stars of the film were Aishwarya Rai, Tabu and Ajith. His other Tamil super hit films are Marumalarchi, Arasiyal and Makkal Aatchi. Fazil directed Kilippechu Kekkavaa was another successful film that gained box office victory by competing with Rajnikanth and Kamal Hassan films in Tamil Nadu. Aanandam directed by N. Linguswamy and Kaarmegham were also his super hits in Tamil. Mammootty's last Tamil film was Viswa Thulasi. The film was a box office disaster but his acting was noticed in the film.

He made his Bollywood debut in an arty film Thriyathri in 1989. However, his maiden Bollywood film as hero, Dhartiputra went unnoticed. Mammootty, nonetheless made his presence felt on the national level with the biographical film on Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Directed by Jabbar Patel. So realistic was his performance that it was reported thousands who watched the shooting of the film were in tears after the shooting. No wonder, he again bagged the coveted Rajat Kamal for best acting. Mammootty's Sau Jhooth Ek Sach won critical acclaim but the film didn't do well at the box office. Mammootty's Telugu]film Swathi Kiranam was a superhit but the remake in Malayalam titled Pranavam was a failure on home turf.

After a long interval, Mammootty is acting in a new Kollywood film Aruvadai (a bilingual movie), will be released both in Tamil as well as Malayalam. Its Malayalam version titled as Vandemataram. Tamil action hero Arjun Sarja is also doing an important role in the film and the film will have two heroines -- Mamta Mohandas and Sneha.

International fame

Life-like Ambedkar

Mammootty spent almost a year going through books and articles in Dr. Ambedkar his life, his mannerisms etc. The actor had to go through hours of make up and dental manipulations to get the right look. When the movie was finally released, it was widely acclaimed in several leading Film Festivals. People could not believe their eyes when they saw the glamor-king Mammootty in a completed make over. It was life-like Dr. Ambedkar. So convincing and brilliant was his Performance that he was awarded the National Film Award for Best Actor in 1998. Jabbar Patel directed the English language movie Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar about the life of Ambedkar, released in 2000, Sponsored by National Film Development Corporation of India and the Ministry of Social Justice, the film was released after a long and controversial gestation period.

Jabbar Patel comments on Ambedkar and Mammootty:
“ Anyone who has seen the film will agree that Dr Ambedkar could not have been possible without Mammootty. How did the filmmaker settle on him? I was making a film in English and I went all around the world, met and saw actors in Canada, United States and United Kingdom. Physically, many actors in America came close but I was not sure about how they would portray the whole sensibility and inner turmoil. I was also not happy about the gestures. I had shortlisted 2-3 people and knew that it would be troublesome as I would have to get them here and train them. So I was not really happy. Then I decided to do something about Mammootty, who was hiding in my mind for a very long time. ”

So started the entire exercise of doing computer graphics on Mammootty’s face, the results showed that physically he came very close. When the director approached him initially through a third person, the southern superstar laughed off the idea. But once Mammootty agreed to do the role he got into it wholeheartedly. He made several physical changes like shaving off his mustache and his hair to get the receding hairline. According to Dr Patel:
“ He gave a terrific performance. He not only had to look like Ambedkar, but had to smile and get angry like Ambedkar. One can act emotional, show anger and all that. But how do you show that you are intelligent?" And Mammootty achieved that so easily in the film. The actor listened to me very carefully, read the script very carefully, He also requested that we should not take too many rehearsals. So we were very particular to can the shot in one or two takes. Mammootty’s journey was from inwards. He was trying to construct a role from within with a cerebral support. You will notice that he doesn't have many big speeches in the film. But he's still so expressive in silence ”

Films shown in International festivals

His famous work Mathilukal ('The Walls') has been shown in almost 40 International Film festival beginning with Venice. The ace director Adoor Gopalakrishnan said:
“ Among my films, it is Mathilukal which has invited the maximum number of international honors. The sincere co-operation by Mammootty, the actor has played a major role in the success of the movie". ”

The film is an adaptation of the novel Mathilukal by Vaikom Muhammad Basheer. The film's music is composed by Vijay Bhaskar. It was well received upon screening at the Venice International Film Festival, and won 4 awards at the National Film Awards in 1990.

Vidheyan, the cinematic adaptation of the novel "Bhaskara Pattelarum Ente Jeevithavum" by Malayalam writer Paul Zachariah explores the master-slave dialectic in a South Karnataka setting. Vidheyan won the State Film Awards for best film and best director for Adoor Gopalakrishnan. Mammootty won the National Film Award and State Film Awardfor this film in 1993. The film also won the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC) Award at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, along with the Interfilm Award - Honorable Mention at the Mannheim-Heidelberg International Film Festival.

His remarks during the 2006 IIFA Awards ceremony held at Dubai had gained a lot of media and public attention.[citation needed] He openly criticized the organizers of the IIFA Awards for completely ignoring South Indian films. Mammootty suggested that the Bollywood film industry stand up to competition from the South Indian film industry before calling itself International.[citation needed] He commented:

Mammootty has turned writer with his first book Kazhchapadu (roughly translated as Perspective) a compilation of short essays he has written in various publications over the years.[42] M. T. Vasudevan Nair the doyen of Malayalam writers and a personal friend of Mammootty issued the first copy of the book published by the famous Current Books, Trichur to C. V. Sreeraman. Speaking at the occasion, M. T. Vasudevan Nair said:
“ Only those with a wealth of experience in their life can become great artists. Looking back, Mammootty had a lot of memories which he has crafted into essays which makes interesting reading. ”

M. T. Vasudevan Nair was all praise for Mammootty’s style of writing. Mammootty in his speech explained:
“ I have always wanted to be a writer, and had been writing even when I was a student. I hadn't published anything though, After trying to be a singer and a writer then only I became an actor. ”

Fortunate escapes from accidents

Mammootty was injured in a car accident in Nirmala city near Kattappana, Idukki. He was on his way to shooting at Idukki. Mammootty was working in director Blessy's film Palunku. The accident happened on the morning of November 17, 2006.His car got into a minor accident when it collided with a private bus. Mammootty was slightly injured in his hand. He was administered first aid at a nearby private hospital. Soon afterwards, he left for the shooting spot. Since his car was damaged badly, he was taken to the shooting spot in another car. Mammootty informed his fans that there is nothing to worry. Mammootty, who soon returned to the film's sets, said:
“ I cannot afford to take a break. A delay would mean a loss not just to this producer but also other producers.[43] ”

In 2007 February 19, Mammootty met with an accident on the sets of Amal Neerad's Big B that could have even cost his life. Mammootty had a lucky escape during shooting of an action scene of Big B when a flying metal piece from an exploding car missed him by inches. The shoot was stopped immediately. Mammootty explained:
“ I was shooting for a scene where a car was blown up by a petrol bomb. A portion of the exploding car flew inches away from my face. God is great. After the incident we saw it replayed on the video and only then we knew the gravity of the situation. It was a narrow escape.[44] ”

The shooting commenced after a break.
Political rumors

Mammottty was once a KSU member (a student wing of Indian National Congress).[citation needed]There was a rumor prevailing that the Communist Party of India (Marxist) would field him for one of the three Rajya Sabha seats from Kerala during [[June 26, 2004]] elections.[45][46] Later on the news subsided as Mammootty denied any such possibility.[47] Mammootty is known to be close to the Communist Party of India (Marxist).[48] He is the chairman of Malayalam Communications in which the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has a high stake.[49] And he clarified that he had no intention of joining any political party. Film stars in Kerala have maintained a distance from politics, unlike their counterparts in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

Controversies

Mammootty, who has a huge fan following in Tamil Nadu as well, was addressing thousands of youth who had gathered for the inaugural session of the eighth national conference of the Democratic Youth Federation of India, In May 2007, at Chennai.[50][51] Mammootty in his speech said:
“ I memorize all my scripts for films, but what I am saying today is from my heart ”

He stressed that the Gujarat carnage in 2002 'would not have happened' if the youth wings had been stronger in that state. Mammootty also saw a greater role for political parties in strife-torn Jammu and Kashmir. This statement did not go down well with the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. The prominent stars like Mammootty take part in conventions like Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), it will strengthen the ruling Marxist party and spell doom for the Indian National Congress to come to power.[52] This has led to police protection being extended to the actor and also his house at Ernakulam. But his comments about globalization went unnoticed.

Mammootty has denied allegations by the Indian National Congress party in Kerala that he had constructed buildings on encroached lands in the hill station of Munnar and Kochi.[53] In a statement issued from Chennai, where he is shooting for his film Pazhassi Raja, Mammootty said: "I do not possess any unlawfully acquired land in Kerala or any other state.[54]. He added that if any lapse had occurred in any land dealings without his knowledge, he was "prepared to return the land without any condition”. "I spoke at the DYFI conference only as an ordinary citizen of India. I did not level any charge in my speech against any particular leader or movement," he explained:
“ "Don't read too much politics into it. I am inaugurating that event because the DYFI asked me to. If the Congress asks me to inaugurate their meeting, I may do that too," ”

He was offered to act as Coca-Cola's Brand ambassador in Kerala during March 2004.[55] But, pressure from various quarters, it seems, has prompted the Megastar to give up the ambitious offer.[56] Several environmental groups were calling for the soft drink's boycott. Ending a weeklong debate in the media over the propriety of his promoting the Coca-Cola brands in the State, he issued a statement denying that he had taken up the role of a Brand ambassador.[57][58]

During the celebration of his new release Roudram, Mammootty was accused of slapping a fan. In an interview, he denied the allegation and said "I could sense that the passion was running high when I arrived for the promo because my new film was running in several theatres across north Kerala. The fans were excited to see me and for me, fans mean everything. Seeing the mood and the fervour of my fans, I opened the roof of my car and stood up. As soon as I stood up, fans rushed to my moving car and wanted to touch me. Isn't it a natural thing to happen? Stars are often mobbed. But soon I noticed that things were moving out of control and people were coming closer to my car. I was really concerned about the safety of those who were near my car and I started warning them".
