Probe ordered into Malayalam actor's death

Police have been ordered to probe the death of popular Malayalam film and TV actor Sreenath, Kerala Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said Wednesday.

"I have forwarded the request from the actor's family for a through probe into Sreenath's death," said Balakrishnan.

The actor was found dead with his wrist slashed in a hotel at Kothamangalam in Ernakulam district last Friday morning.

On Sunday, the actor's brother Satyanath held a press conference here and said they suspected foul play in his death. Kothamangalam is around 250 km from here.

Sreenath was shooting for Malayalam film "Shikar" starring superstar Mohanlal.

Satyanath said it was shocking that no one from the sets of "Shikar" came to attend the funeral and did not even call the actor's family.

Meanwhile, reports said the actor was omitted from the film "Shikar" since he was not a member of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA).

Actor Thilakan, who was recently thrown out of AMMA, lashed out at the group saying it has become "a mafia organization capable of doing any thing".

"There are allegations that Sreenath was mentally harassed by few people in AMMA. There are many in AMMA who are bearing all the unpleasant experiences silently. They keep quiet out of fear of being ostracized. It is high time the culture ministry intervenes," said Thilakan.

Sreenath, who was in his early 50s, began his film career in the 1980s but faded out after an initial burst of movies.

After a hiatus, he went on to become a popular television actor though he continued to act in films occasionally.

'Pokkiri Raja' to release on May. 6; 'Oru Naal Varum' on May.7

With the ongoing conflict between the exhibitors and distributors seeing no end, the release of 'Pokkiri Raja' has been postponed by a week.

The film that was scheduled to release on the the 30th of April would now make it to the theatres on the 6th of May.

'Pokkiri Raja' directed by Vaisakh has a mammoth star cast that includes Mammootty, Prithviraj and Shreya Sharan.

Meanwhile 'Oru Naal Varum' directed by Rajeev Kumar and that stars Mohanlal and Sreenivasan with Sameera Reddy would release on the 7th of May.

With these two star studded projects releasing together, Malluwood looks all set for yet another star battle in May.

Mammootty's son Salman to make a debut in Malayalam

Mammootty's son Salman is all set to make his debut as a lead actor in Malayalam films.

In all probability, it would be Linguswamy, the hot shot Tamil director who would be directing this film.

Linguswamy has delivered several hit films in Tamil that include his latest film 'Payya'.

The director says that he considers Mammootty like an elder brother. "Mammootty himself asked me to do this film in Malayalam. Mammootty would act in a cameo in the film as well," Linguswamy said.

Another star son, for Mollywood landing

Like every other film industry in India, Mollywood too witnessed the landing of many star-sons, of which majority couldn't prove good as their star fathers. The big list of such entries include Shanavas, Saikumar, Meghanathan, Jishnu, Fahad Fazil and Saji Soman. Mollwyood being a peculiar case, the very few who could find a good name and space for themselves include a very few, the latest being Saikumar, Prithviraj and Indrajith.

Superstar  Mohanlal's son Pranav had been in a passing shot in the movie 'Sagar Alias Jackey', which gives a hint that the star son will land up in Mollwyood cinema, in a couple of years. Anyhow, what we are on is about the buzz around Megastar Mammootty's son 'Dulquar Salman' who is all set to be in movies, in a short while. As per the Tamil director Lingusamy who is a close friend to Mammootty, the megastar has already demanded him to cast his son in his first Malayalam film. Mammootty seems to have agreed Lingusamy that if needed, he will come-up in a guest role to support his son, in this new movie.

It is not yet clear when will Lingusamy, who is presently busy around his Tamil projects, find time to start off his first Mollywood movie. And if it happens in the near future, we may soon witness Dulquar Salman as a star material, probably rechristened with a more popular name.

‘Pokkiri Raja’ to drop London song

For all those who had been eagerly waiting to see the visuals of the most heard song of 'Pokkiri Raja', "Manikinavin Kothumbu Vallam"…set to music by Jassie Gift, this could be a bad news.

The crew of the movie had not been able to shoot the visuals for this song with Shriya Saran and Prithviraj . Since Prithvi was not able to get his Visa ready for a shoot session at London, the crew had no other way to opt than to decide to avoid the song.

Since Shriya was shooting for a movie at London, she was also not available to shoot, even if the crew planned the song sequence in any other place in India. Anyhow, the young director of the movie Vyshakh will sit with editor Mahesh Narayanan to create a Television version of the song with the available shots, which will be opened in the channels from the first week of the movie's release.

The movie featuring Mammootty and Prithviraj together for the first time in full length roles, is expected to grace the theatres on the thirtieth of this month.

A gangster to follow Daddy Cool

After bagging much critical approval for his debut movie with Mammootty 'Daddy Cool', young director Aashiq Abu was in the search for a more meaningful story line to cast the megastar again. As he has got one from two debutant scriptwriters, Aashiq Abu is getting ready with his second project, again with Mammootty.

Titled as 'Gangster', the movie will feature Mammootty in the title role. Mammootty had earlier been in similar roles from the films like 'Athirathram, Samrajyam and Parampara to the latest Big B'. The movie is said to feature artists like Parthiban and Rohini Hattangadi in key roles.

'Gangster' will be a bilingual shot simultaneously in Tamil and Malayalam.

Exhibitors not for theater bandh

A relief to many! Kerala Film Exhibitors association has decided not to shut down theaters from the first of May, as they have decided and announced earlier.

The executive committee meeting that was held at Kochi today, decided to continue with their shows and schedules, if the distributors continue with their present proportions of holdovers based on three shows in a day. Federation president Liberty Basheer has made it clear that they will never accept distributors demand to include the collections of the noon shows, while deciding hold over status.

'Pokkiri Raja' to open in 124 centers

The new big budget flick with Mammootty and Prithviraj, 'Pokkiri Raja', will grace the theaters by the 30th of this month. The movie will make the biggest release in the recent times of Mollywood. As per the present plans, the movie will grace 84 centers within the state, while it will be released in 31 centers outside Kerala.

Featuring Mammootty and Prithviraj in the lead, the movie presents Shriya Saran for the first time in Mollywood. The music department of the movie is handled by Jassie Gift and Kaithapram Damodharan Namboothiri.

Produced and distributed by Mulakupadam, the movie is scripted by Udhay Krisshna-Sibi K Thomas. Directed by debutant Vyshakh, the movie will feature five action sequences and three songs in an interesting plot which tells the story of two brothers.

Actor Sreenath is no more

Popular Movie actor Sreenath was found dead today in a hotel at Kothamanagalam. The actor had his wrist slashed when the hotel staff opened his room by 8:30 am. Police suspect this to be a case of suicide. Sreenath was staying in the room no. 102 of Mariya hotel for the last two days shooting for the Malayalam movie 'Shikaar' featuring Mohanlal.

Sreenath, who was alumni of Madras film institute began his film career in the early eighties and was one of the popular heroes for a couple of years and was able to create hits like Shalini Ente Kootukari, Ithu Njangalude Katha, Sandhya Mayangum Neram, Muthodu Muthu, Ayanam and Mangalam Nerunnu in the early period of his career.

During the good times Sreenath had been with Santhikrishna in some hit movies and they got married by the mid of eighties. But the marriage didn't last long and they moved into divorce after 15 years.

By that time the actor lost his charisma and was not seen in the films of the nineties. He then turned his into television serials where he had a very good time, donning central roles in popular soaps including Shree Janmam and Parijatham. The actor was the part of a couple of serials that are still telecasted in the evenings.

Sreenath's last film was Renjith's 'Kerala Café' released last year.

A big Saturday

As the controversies and newer agitations had affected much of the Malayalam film industry's outputs, everyone in the field is expecting the issues to get over by this Saturday.

As the Film Chamber has invited every trade organization from the industry to sit around a table to sort their problems tomorrow, Mollywood trade unions may end its fights and regain its lost vigor from this Sunday. Since newer Malayalam films like Pokkiri Raja, Mummy And Me and Katha Thudaraum are in the wait for a release by next weekend, the midsummer Box Office will be back to activity by the first of next month.

Tamil actor's Vijay's 'Sura' is another big movie that is expected by the end of this month.

Kerala film exhibitors threaten to shut theatres

With the Kerala Film Producers' Association already on boycott, another important stakeholder in the entertainment industry - the exhibitors --Wednesday threatened that if the present crisis is not solved, they would close down all theatres from May 1.

Speaking to a TV channel here Wednesday, Liberty Basheer, president of the Exhibitors Federation, asked what is the use of keeping the theatres open if no films are being produced?.

"This present stalemate has to end and it has to end at the earliest. There is going to be a meeting of the Kerala Film Chamber April 24 and we expect this issue would be taken up," Basheer said.

The chamber is the body of producers, distributors and exhibitors of the Malayalam film industry.

The producers association is cut up with the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) because despite two rounds of talks with them last year to bring down the cost of production, no concrete steps were taken by AMMA.

The producers association hence decided that no new films would be produced.

Has 'Amar Akbar Antony' been shelved?

Rumours are rife in the industry that Jagadeesh's directorial debut 'Amar Akbar Antony' with Mammootty in the lead has been shelved!

Even if the rumours are not true, it is likely that Jagadeesh's film would be postponed, almost indefinitely. Industry sources say that 'Amar Akbar Antony' has been postponed since it was likely to turn out into a big budget film.

Jagadeesh has plans to cast Mammootty in three roles and had planned shoots in some major cities in India. It is said that there were also plans to rope in some big names from Bollywood for the project.

Mammootty after his return from the US was expected to start this project. However, he would now be joining the location of the bilingual film 'Shikari' to be directed by Ajay Sinha. Soon after, he would start working on Sohan Seenulal's film 'Doubles' in which he would team up with Nadia Moithu.

Gopika blessed with baby girl

One of the most popular actresses of recent years, Gopika was blessed with a baby girl yesterday. The actress and her baby are in good health, taking rest at a hospital at Ireland.

Gopika who got married in July 2008, moved away from films and settled at Ireland with her husband Dr.Ajilesh, who practices there. Last year, she found time to make a comeback to filmdom with Dileep starer 'Swa.Le' which was also much appreciated. Incidentally, she played a pregnant wife in the movie, which passed through all the traumas of insecurity before delivering a baby.

Sreenivasn to face the ire of the Film Chamber

Actor Sreenivasan is likely to face the ire of the Film Chamber now.

Sreenivasan had earlier commented that the decisions of the Film Chamber were foolish, and that instead of looking for real reasons behind the failure of films, they were doing something else.

The Film Chamber General Secretary Evershine Mani said that the Chamber would seek an explanation from the actor for having made such comments.

Mani said that the matter has been brought to the notice of the Chamber through the media. He also asked that if the people who were managing the Chamber were not up the mark in the actor's opinion, why did he cooperate with them to make films?

'Palery Manickyam' to have a re-release this Vishu!

'Palery Manickyam- Oru Pathira Kolapathakathinte Katha'- which was selected as the year's best movie by the State Award jury is going for a re-release. In a rarer event in the Mollywood industry, the movie will get into thirty centers today for a repeat release, that too in a gap of six months.

Apart from the award for the best film, it also bagged the Best Actor award by Mammootty and the Best Actress award for Shwetha Menon.

The movie which was originally released during the months of November, was critically acclaimed, but didn't create any big response at the Box Office. The movie managed to cross fifty days in a couple of centres in its first run.
A film that is released is very rarely re-released, and that too almost never within an year's time.

'Palery Manickyam', directed by Ranjith that had bagged the Best Film award at the Kerala State Film Awards this year might prove an exception to this rule.

The film had also bagged the Best Actor award for Mammootty and the Best Actress award for Shwetha Menon.

The producer of the film Subair has decided to re-release the film on Vishu day, since there has been an increasing demand from the public to view the film.

The film that was critically acclaimed had however created not much of a response at the box-office when it was originally released a few months back.

Shaji Kailash with Mammootty again

Popular Director of action thrillers, Shaji Kailash made another mistake with his recent Mammootty starer 'Drona 2010' which hardly thrilled or chilled any of its viewers. One of the biggest disasters of recent times, the movie was reviewed to be a downer mostly due to its logic-less and patchy script-line by A K Saajan.

Anyhow the director Shaji Kailash was also at the receiving end for selecting such a surely doomed script to make a film with the Megastar. Moreover, Shaji hadn't been able to create a big hit for the last half a decade after his 'Chinthamani Kolacase', which appeared in 2006. Some of his movies like Time, Alibhai, and Don were big debacles in the BO, with only a Baba Kalyani emerging as an average hit in these five years.

Martin Prakkat-Mammootty film shapes up

Ace photographer Martin Prakkat's first movie as a director is getting finalized as a solid project. The movie, yet to be titled will have Megastar Mammootty as the hero.

Martin Prakkat will himself write the story of this movie which will be reshaped to suit the screen by Bipin Chandran. Sreenivasan will appear in a pivotal role in this movie which will also have Nedumudi Venu, Suraj Venjaramoodu and Salimkumar in the cast lines. Bijibal will set the music of this movie, produced by Naushad in the banner of Big screen entertainments.

Actor Santhosh Jogi found hanging in Thrissur

Thrissur, Tuesday, 13 April 2010: It is reported that Malayalam film actor Santhosh Jogi was found hanging in his flat at around 3 in the afternoon. He has acted in around 25 films. The reason for death has not yet been ascertained.

He has been staying in his friend's flat since last night. When his friend returned home, he found the door locked from inside and there was no response. He soon alerted the police, who found Santhosh hanging on opening the door.

His performance in Keerthicharka , Mayavi were worth notable. His other films Pokkiriraja , Christian Brothers are yet to be released.

Prithvi with Shreya in London for 'Pokkiri Raja' song shoot

Young superstar Prithviraj is in London currently shooting for a song sequence of the highly anticipated film 'Pokkiri Raja'.

The leading lady of the film, Shreya Sharan is with Prithvi for the song shoot.

'Pokkiri Raja', being directed by debutante director Vaishakh is eagerly expected by fans, since it marks the coming together of Megastar Mammootty and Prithviraj in two equal roles.

The dubbing of 'Pokkiri Raja' meanwhile is currently on at Kochi.

Mammootty with Sreenivasan in Martin Prakkat's film

Mammootty would play the main role in renowned photographer Martin Prakkatt's film.

Sreenivasan would also be seen in a major role. Nedumudi Venu, Suraj Venjarammoodu, Salim Kumar would form the supporting cast. The heroine has not yet been decided.

Bipin Chandran would script the film that would have music by Bijibal.

The shoot of the film that would be produced by Noushad for Big Screen Cinema would start at Kochi on the 20th of May.

Shaji Kailas to do another film with Mammootty after 'Drona'

Drona 2010 was not an excellent way to start off the year for Megastar Mammootty. The film that was directed by Shaji Kailas was a disaster at the box office.

However now it looks like Shaji Kailas is going to team up with Mammootty yet again for another film.

The script writer of the film would be S N Swamy, who had recently penned the script for the Mohanlal starrer 'Janakan'.

One of the major reasons for the failure of 'Drona' was cited to be the script by A K Sajan. Perhaps this is the reason why Sajan is no longer together with the team when they are planning their next film.

Is it Mohanlal Or Mammootty? Mohanlal is senior. He came to the Industry in Randu Janmam in 1978.
Mammootty Came to the industry with Vilkkanundu Swapnangal in 1980.
So Mohanlal completed 31 years and Mammootty Completed 29 Years in Movie Industry. Till date Mohanlal Acted in How many Movies?
Mohanlal Acted 295 Movies in 31 years Till date Mammootty Acted in How Many Movies? Mammootty Acted in 341 Movies in 29 years.
Why it is like that?
We need to analyze the reasons in detail.
Producers were so confident about Mammootty. He was the star of Families in 80's and they got their money back. Mohanlal was not so successful at that time and compared to Mammootty he got less number of films even though he is senior to Mammootty in movie experience. Mammootty has 18 block buster movies and Mohanlal has 12 block buster Movies. (The list is produced below)
Among Mammootty and Mo0hanlal Who got the National Award First? Mammootty got in 1989 and Mohanlal got it in 1991 only. Mammootty got Bets actor National Award 3 times while Mohanlal got 2 times. When Mammootty Got the National Award in 1989 for Vadakkan Veera Ghadha and Mathilukal, He has beaten Mohanlal in Kireedam. So a junior won over a senior. I think you are getting the picture clearly. Both got best actor state award for 6 times. In 2008 they have not given Mammootty the best actor and gave it to Prithviraj for Vasthavam. The jury T K Rajiv Kumar might have got some money from Prithviraj. He is saying that Prithviraj's role was better than Mammootty's Role in Karutha Pakshikal and Ore Kadal. What sarcasm!!. I am sure nobody will be remembering the role which Prithvi did in Vasthavam. Do you think anyone will pump that much money for a Mohanlal movie? Mammooty is so professional. Becuause of that reason Gogulam Gopalan spent 27 crores for a malayam movie. This movie has already collected 18 crores in 25 days from kerala. It is still running in 125 Theatres in kerala and is going to release in 400 theatres in India (Out of which 120 theatres in Tamil Nadu). No producer will dare to spend this much money to a mohanlal movie. because they will think about the plights of Angel John, Photographer , Vamanapuram Bus Route , Hariharan Pillai Happy Aanu , Chathurangam , Thandavam , Onnaman , Praja , Sradha , The Prince , Kadathanadan Ambadi etc!!! Mohan Lal is a Born actor and Mammooty is a Method actor. Born actor is like Gold. It has same shining and purity always. Method actor is like diamond.
The brightness and clarity will increase the more you polish it. So for MOhanlal. If you take you can see same Mohanlal in more than 1 movies. Nadodikattu, Vel nakalude Nadu, Sanmanassullavarkku Samadhanam etc are same. Mannerism remains same but situation changes. If you compare closely Kilukkam, Chithram etc are same. Same as his Moutache roles. But Mammooty.. he clearly observe people and bring it to his characters. He does his homework very well. Thats why you can see the same mohanlal in all the movies. Some have asked here whether mammooty can do the role of Mohanlal did it in Vanaprastha and Kamala Dalam. Its all Bull ****. Can Mohanlal changes his way of dialogue delivery? He is the same mohanlal in all the movies. But if you take Mammooty delivers
different modulation and Style. In Visheyan he uses a different dialect of Kerala Karnataka Border people. In Raja Manikyam he uses Trivandrum style. In Amaram he uses Mukkuva dialect. In thuruppu Gulan he imitates and tries 8 different voice modulations. In King...It is enegetic. In Pazhassiraja..it is so royal...In Vadakkan veeraghadha..it is so vadakkan...If he plays Achayan roles..the sound also chages to suit to Kottayam and Pala achayans. In Kazhcha he is so "naadan". Mammootty to pen dialogues for his bilingual film

Mammootty's bilingual movie will go on floors in May and producer K. Manju says the superstar will write the dialogues for the Malayalam version of the film.

The Kannada version is titled "Shikari", but the title for Malayalam version has not yet been finalised.

"He was so impressed with the script that he offered to write the dialogues of the film himself. We were excited when he accepted the responsibility of writing the dialogues. His book 'Kazchapadu', a collection of essays in Malayalam, has been widely appreciated," said Manju.

Film's director Abhay Simha said: "I had contacted Mammootty a year ago with the script to make a film in Kannada. He took time to read the complete script and was impressed. Though he had agreed to work in my film, the dates were not finalised."

"Meanwhile, I got well-known Kannada film producer (Manju) to make the film and Mammootty also suggested to make it in two languages, including Malayalam, as the script was strong and universal."

Simha says that the film will go on floors once Mammootty is back from his vacation.

"We also worked out other details. Just last week I met Mammootty in Mumbai, he has agreed to work in my film from the month of May. He has gone abroad for a holiday. He will return in the first week of May. We may start shooting in Bengaluru from May second week," Simha, who won National Award for his debut film "Gubbachchigalu", told IANS.

The makers haven't finalised the actress. Earlier, Konkana Sen Sharma was approached and she had even agreed to be part of the film. But Simha says it would be doubtful if Konkana renews her interest in doing this film as she is busy working in other movies.
"The heroine and other technical cast will be finalised in a few days," said Simha.

Eesal song to create record!

Eesal director Vijay Aditya is reportedly all set to create a record by working on a song that includes lyrics in 24 Indian languages. The song, written by Venkat, has been set to tune by Mithun Ishwar. And, that's not all; 24 singers are being roped in to sing the song. There are reports that Megastar Mammootty will sing the Malayalam lines.

Earlier, Vijay Aditya has worked as an associate with Malayalam filmmakers Sasi and Biju Nair. Now he is all set to make his Kollywood debut in Eesal.

Film Chamber demands that stars stay away from TV

There seems to be no end to the controversies that have been plaguing the Malayalam film industry.

The Film Chamber meeting today demanded that stars including actors and singers should refrain from taking part in programmes on TV. These programmes include reality shows and other stage shows hosted by private groups.

The Film Chamber said it did not expect any opposition regarding these decisions since it had already entered into an agreement with AMMA back in 2003. However these decisions were not maintained.

There are any number of singers and other artistes who have been quite active on television as well, as reality show judges as well as hosts of other major programmes. The Film Chamber decision is therefore likely to meet with protest from several quarters.

The Chamber also decided to institute awards for excellence in cinema.

No appearing on TV, Kerala forum's diktat to actors, singers

The Kerala Film Chamber Thursday asked all film artistes, singers and technicians not to appear on television for doing shows from May 1.

The Chamber is the body of producers, distributors and exhibitors in the Malayalam film industry.

Addressing reporters here after a meeting of the Chamber, one of the office bearers said that a similar decision had been taken in 2002 but nothing happened.

"This time we will see that the order is obeyed. From May 1 all artistes, singers and technicians should not appear on programmes in televisions or other stage programmes. If they do that their films will not be screened," said the office bearers.

One reason why such a decision is going to be implemented sternly is that there has been a drop in theatre collections, which has affected the stake holders of the Chamber.

However, veteran singer M.G. Sreekumar dismissed the move as "ridiculous".

"This year I have sung just four film songs and all what I have earned is Rs.25,000. If they are so particular that this new rule has to be implemented then let them ensure that I get to sing songs in every film that is released," said Sreekumar.

The ban extends to reality shows, being judges on TV shows and such programmes. However they can appear on TV if it is meant to promote a film which they have acted in, the Chamber clarified.

Film Chamber to go tough on star remunerations

The Film Chamber would adopt a tough stand on star remunerations and also insist that stars do not take part in channel shows.

It has also started an initiative to come to an agreeable consensus regarding these matters, after discussions with AMMA and FEFCA.

It is learned that the Film Chamber has been forced to take such decisions after a disastrous 2009, when a majority of the films that were released sank without a trace at the box office. The estimated loss for the industry during last year is about eighty crores.

The Film Chamber would hold a meeting today at Cochin. Reduction in the remuneration of the stars would be a major point of discussion, according to Evershine Mani, Chamber Secretary.

Different producers, distributors and theatre owners would take part in the meeting. It should be remembered that several suggestions to reduce the overall cost of the film including restricting the budget to three and a half crores are yet to be put into practice.

Resul Pookutty, C V Balakrishnan & Madhu Kaithapram against State Awards Jury

day after the Kerala State Awards 2009 have been announced, reactions to the decisions of the jury have started pouring in from different corners.

Oscar winning sound designer Resul Pookutty expressed his disappointment at not being given the Best Sound Designer award.

The award for Best Sound Design had gone to Harikumar for his work in 'Patham Nilayile Theevandi'.

Resul in an interview to a TV channel said that he was not sure why the jury had ignored his work in 'Pazhassi Raja'. He said that the jury consisted of members who were not able to differentiate between sound and music.

Resul said that he was ready to accept the jury's decision, but maintained that the opinion that the sound design for 'Pazhassi Raja' did not have a regional flavor to it, did not make any sense.

Meanwhile C V Balakrishnan, renowned writer, said that it was not right to make an outdated filmmaker as Sai Paranjpye the Chair Person of the jury.

Madhu Kaithapram, director of 'Madhyavenal' said that the decisions of the jury were quite 'senile'.

Mammootty's second Kannada flick

One of the most accomplished actors of India, Malayalam superstar Mammootty, who debuted in Kannada with Love in 2005, is getting ready for his second Kannada film titled Shikari to be directed by Abhay Sinha.

According to sources, the actor will play a double role: the first as a software techie and the second as a freedom fighter. The movie deals with the pre and post independence conditions in India. The story and screenplay are by the director himself.

It is also heard that the director is trying to rope in Bollywood star Konkona Sen Sharma as the heroine. The shooting is expected to begin from the first week of May. Anmol Bhave will score the music, while Shrivatsa cranks the camera. The film is produced by veteran K. Manju. More details are awaited.

Mammootty to do 'Shikari'; Mohanlal gets ready for 'Shikar'

Mammootty is all set to star in a double role once again in 'Shikari', a Kannada film to be directed by Abhay Sinha. Mammootty would play a software engineer and a freedom fighter in the film.

The shooting of the film would start at the beginning of May in Bangalore.With this the director's longtime wish to have Mammootty playing the lead in his film would come true.

'Shikari' would be Mammootty's first Kannada film, and would be produced by one of the veteran producers of Kannada cinema, K Manju.

Meanwhile, the other superstar of Malayalam films is planning to start the shoot of his film 'Shikar' that would be directed by Padmakumar. Mohanlal would play a lorry driver by the name of Balaraman in the film. Ananya would appear as his daughter in the film.

Suraja Venjarammoodu, Lekshmi Gopalaswami and Jagathy Sreekumar would also appear in 'Shikar'. The search for a heroine for the film that has been scripted by Suresh Babu is still on.

The film would be shot at Adimali, Idukki, Thoothukkudi and Hyderabad. 'Shikar' would be Mohanlal's next major project this year.

Mammooty and his films shine at Kerala film awards

Malayalam superstar Mammooty and his films dominate the Kerala State Film Awards 2009 which were announced by State Minister for Culture M.A. Baby Tuesday.

Mammooty is named the best actor for his roles in "Paleri Manikam Oru Pathirakolapathakam", while his film "Pazhassi Raja" won the best director award for Hariharan.

Together both the films bagged 12 awards, with "Pazhassi Raja" winning eight and "Paleri Manikam..." four, including the best film award.

"'Pazhassi Raja' really merited all these awards because it was a technical masterpiece and was breath-taking evoking a bygone era," said Sai Paranjape who headed the jury that saw 36 feature films, two children's film and two documentaries.

Mammooty, who is on a month-long holiday, was not available for comments. But Renjith said that it is great moment for him because his efforts have been appreciated well.

Swetha, who was declared the best actress for her performance in "Paleri Manikam...", said initially she was apprehensive about the role because the character was slightly older than her age.

"Renjith was adamant that I should do it because it was a character that had lot of potential. Just because he insisted, I took it and I am so happy that I have won an award," she said.

Another Malayalam superstar Mohanlal's film "Ividae Swarghamanu" was named the best popular film.

But Paranjape feels that the quality of Malayalam films has come down.

"Of all the films which we saw, it was just under 10 films that had the required quality. I hope this situation would improve," she said.

Pazhassi Raja's Awards

The magnum opus Mammootty-starrer 'Pazhassi Raja,' written by M.T. Vasudevan Nair and directed by Hariharan, won eight awards at the State film awards for 2009 announced on Tuesday.

The movie won the best director award for Hariharan and best screenplay award for veteran writer M T Vasudevan Nair. Apart from these, the awards won by 'Pazhassi Raja' includes that for second best actor award for Manoj K. Jayan, second best female actor award for Padmapriya, best film editor for Sreekar Prasad, best art director award for Muthuraj, best costumer award for Natarajan, and best dubbing artiste for Shobby Tilakan, who lip-sync-ed for Sarath Kumar.

This is the third best director award for Hariharan who had been early been accorded with the same in Sargam and Parinayam, while M T is given the state recognition for the tenth time, in his illustrious career of forty years.

Mammootty to holiday in US!

Megastar Mammootty is taking a one month break in the US, with his family.

He will be leaving to New York from Dubai on April 7, after launching Asianet Middle East Channel.

The actor has completed the entire work of his Pokkiri Raja, due on April 30.

It will be a well deserved break for the star, who has been working round the clock for the last one year. The actor has been keeping a low profile and refused to get into any slanging match with Thilakan, who went out of his way to tarnish him.

For the next one month the star just plans to chill out with his loved ones in the cool climes of America.

Mammootty will be back in Kerala in the first week of May. He will immediately start work on two films - Sohan Seenulal's Doubles, where Nadiya Moidu plays his twin sister and actor Jagadeesh's directorial debut Amar, Akbar, Antony.

'In Ghosthouse Inn' in the lead

he last week was a more woeful week for the theaters as the cricket (IPL) and the year end exams, did affect their regular collections to a large extent. The week saw a number of new releases, which made great impact at the box office. The current favorites in the list are:The top five Malayalam films of the weekend are:

1.'In Ghosthouse Inn': Director Lal's Vishu offering is a winner in all terms. The film got bumber initial collections even after the mixed responses that it evoked. It is a matter to see, how long the movie can stay at the top. The film may mange well, if it can tide over two more week till the midsummer vacations. The songs of the movie, which were earlier calculated as the weakest highlights of the movie have already become good hits, by now.

2. 'Pramani': Mammootty's family entertainer directed by unnikrishnan has average responses and that is only reason the film is not at the top as is the case of openings of the other Mammootty films. If marketed well the film may prove to become a winner.

3.'Thanthonni': Prithvi Raj's first mass movie in the New Year start with a characteristic ' Prithvi'' opening but have climbed up in the weekend. The film gets good initial responses. But now on to the second weekend, the collection of the film is slipping due to mixed response.

4. 'Happy Husband': This Jayaram- Jayasury starrer is till maintaining its collection graphs an turned our be a first super hit of 2010. The film hasn't taken a fall with the arrival of big blockbusters and is making an inflow of more than fifty percent in major theaters. The film which will reach hundred days next week continues in few release centers.

5. 'BodyGuard': Siddique's biggest film in term of budget, and visual impact is also expected to become Average earner in box office. The film in its 75days doesn't even collect like hit Dileep flick. But collections are better in bigger cities where the family audiences are supporting the movie.

Small banner Mollywood films like 'Nayakan' and 'Valiyangadi' are finding it very hard to get the audience to run at least a couple of shows, a day. The lack of newsprint advertisements and of course outdated plots comes as a suffering to the theatres who prefers Kollywood and English movies than to run these sure non starters..

No disappointment in not being selected as Best Director: Ranjith

Director Ranjith said that he was not at all disappointed at not being selected for the Best Director award.

"This is a jury's decision. While the Asianet, Vanitha and Mahtrubhoomi Awards were declared, I was the best director, but 'Pazhassi Raja' was the Best Film. So, as I said, its entirely a jury's decision," Ranjith said.

"The scritping of 'Palery Mainckyam' was the most difficult task. I spent more than seven months for it. The project had cent per cent support from Mammootty. I would hence like to dedicate this award to Mammootty, and the producers Subair and Anoop."

"I am happy that the film has gained recognition. All awards definitely inspire to move even further forward," the director said.

'Palery Manickyam' has bagged several honours at the State Awads this year including Best Film, Best Actor (Mammootty), Best Actress (Shwetha Menon), Best Makeup and Best Costume Design.

Kerala State Film Awards 2009: Mammootty and Shwetha are the Best Actors

he Kerala State Film Awards 2009 have been announced. 'Palery Manickyam' directed by Ranjith has been adjudged the Best Film of the year. Hariharan is the Best Director of the year with his hugely successful and much acclaimed film 'Pazhassi Raja'.

Mammootty has bagged the Best Actor Award for his brilliant essayal of three diverse roles in this spectacular film, while Shwetha Menon has been selected as the Best Actress of the year for lending life to Cheeru in the same film.

The Second Best Actor Award goes to Manoj K Jayan for his amazing act in the magnum opus 'Pazhassi Raja', and Padmapriya was selected as the Second Best Actress for her portrayal of the Adivasi warrior in the same film.

The Best Scriptwriter award goes to M T Vasudevan Nair (Pazhassi Raja) and the award for Best Cinematography goes to K G Jayan (Sufi Paranja Katha). Jagathy Sreekumar has been given a Special recognition by the Jury for his performance in 'Raamanam'.

Idavela Babu and Siddiq shouted at me: Thilakan

* Thilakan who has been expelled from AMMA for life, revealed to a popular news channel today that all was not well at the executive committee meeting at Kochi.

Thilakan said that Idavela Babu, the Joint Secretary of AMMA got so angry at his statements that he sprang up from his seat and started shouting at him.

"Later Siddiq, who had come to the meeting after it had started also got irritated and shouted at me, and asked me to get out. Ganesh Kumar also did not behave well with me," Thilakan said.

AMMA President Innocent at the Press conference however denied any such incidents and said that the meeting was quite peaceful. Innocent said that Thilakan had even earlier said many statements that he had retracted later.

Only fools would expel an actor like Thilakan: Sukumar Azhikode

Prominent orator Sukumar Azhikode reacted to the news of Thilakan being expelled from AMMA, by saying that only fools would expel an actor like Thilakan from the association.

Azhikode lashed out against Mohanlal once again and said that though the actor had used his army uniform for commercial purposes, no action has been taken against him. Azhikode said that definitely Thilakan has not committed as grave an offence as the one Lal has committed.

Azhikode also asked if a military rule was prevailing in AMMA that the association took such a drastic decision. He said he wished the members of AMMA behaved like adults and not like children.

"The least that they could have done is to take Thilakan's age, experience and temperament into consideration. One does not just expel an actor of such great repute, just because he has called the association a 'mafia organisation'," Azhikode said.

I don't want to be a member of AMMA anymore: Thilakan

Actor Thilakan on a prominent news channel after being expelled from AMMA for life, said that he didn't want to be a member of the association any more.

"This association will not let an artiste progress. Every decision that the association took today against me was preplanned. I wasted 5000 rupees as taxi fare to come to the meeting, that I should have given away to the poor and needy."

"Doing a job is a fundamental right. Denying it is not a right thing to do. I have talent that is inborn, and an experience of fifty four years in the acting profession. This is why they are scared of me. Also, I will react when I see something wrong."

"Why was I not made an executive member of AMMA till now?" Thilakan asked. He said that he didn't really need an AMMA or a FEFCA to carry on acting. Within a month there would be announcement of a new film in which he would do the chief role.

"If an association displays mafia like qualities,then what should I call it? I would call it a mafia organization and not a flower. Today after my expulsion, it is clear that AMMA is a mafia organization," Thilakan said.

Thilakan also said that today he knows who his real friends are. Truth will definitely reign supreme. He said that he was considering legal action against AMMA now, and added that he has already filed a case against FEFCA.

AMMA expels Thilakan for life!

The Executive Committee of AMMA, that met at Kochi today to provide Thilakan an opportunity to apologize, expelled the actor for life, after Thilakan refused to retract his statements.

AMMA President and actor Innocent said at a press conference after the meeting, that the committee took the decision to maintain discipline within the organisation.

He also said that this doesn't mean that Thilakan would be banned from acting in films. Also, members of AMMA would be free to interact with the actor despite his expulsion.

When asked by members of the media as to what Thilakan has done against AMMA, Innocent said that it was for everyone to see, since most of Thilakan's statements were conveyed through the media. Innocent also commented in jest that if members of the media did not have the CDs of Thilakan's statements, AMMA would only be glad to hand over copies.

Innocent reminded that AMMA is yet to receive an official complaint from Thilakan. He also said that the discussion was very friendly, and that Thilakan even had tea and soup with them.

However the AMMA President finally concluded by saying that when a member of the association was constantly criticizing the association like Thilakan was doing, some action had to be taken. Or else, it would eventually lead to the destruction of the association itself.

Fourteen members of AMMA, including two women members took part in the meeting today, and finally came to the conclusion after a discussion with Thilakan that lasted for about forty five minutes.

Sai Paranjpe to head Kerala film award jury

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Noted filmmaker Sai Paranjpe has been named the chairperson of the jury to choose the Kerala state film awards for 2009.

According to Kerala State Chalachitra Academy sources, the other members would be K Madhu, B Ajayan, S Saradhakutty, Mukhathala Sivaji, K G Soman and Vidhubala.

A jury chaired by PP Raveendran with Ummer Tharamel and KR Meera as members would select the awardees for books and publications on cinema.

Academy secretary KS Sreekumar would be the member-secretary for both the juries.

'Karnan' might start soon; P Sreekumar to script?

The next magnum opus in Malayalam, 'Karnan' might start sooner than expected.

Its being said that Mammootty has taken an extra bit of interest in the film, the script of which has impressed him thoroughly.

It might come as a surprise to atleast some of us, that the film would be scripted by P Sreekumar. Earlier it was rumoured that M T Vasudevan Nair might be writing the script for this film as well.

Its heard that Gokulam Gopalan and Hariharan plan to recreate the Pazhassi Raja magic yet again, and create a landmark in Malayalam cinema through 'Karnan'.

If rumors that are pouring in are to be believed, 'Karnan' might turn out to be the costliest film to be produced in Malayalam, with a budget of about 50 crores.
