Directing Mammootty, the villain!

Directing Mammootty, the villain!

Director Padmakumar's new Malayalam film Parunthu (eagle) with Mammootty as the hero is out. The director's earlier films -- Ammakkilikkoodu, Vargam and Vasthavam had Prithviraj as the hero.

Mammootty plays the role of a tough money lender (described as blade in the local slang) in Parunthu. The film has been scripted by T A Razack and has Lakshmi Rai in the female lead.

Parunthu hogged the headlines for a different reason as well as the Mohanlal starrer Madambi, which hit the theatres a few days ago is the story about a money-lending Shylock. With these two films going head to head, the popular rhetoric is that it is no less a visual treat for the Malayali audience.

In an exclusive interview, Padmakumar shares the details about Parunthu. Excerpts:

Why did you decide to cast Mammootty as a villain in Parunthu?

I think it is more appropriate to visualise Parunthu Purushu (Mammootty's character) as a realistic one. He has virtually no sentiments at all about his deeds. Purushu is a ruthless money lender but he has his own justification for his acts. He is often seen warning those who approach him for money with the dire consequences that they will have to face if the repayments are not made in time. Even those who take debts from him during various occasions plainly blame him when he tries to get his money back.
