Rajan P Dev passes away:

Versatile Malayalam actor Rajan P Dev, who was admitted to a private hospital following liver problems, passed away here early today . He was under treatment for liver disease for a long time. He is survived by his wife Santha, daughter Ashamma and son Jibile Raj. Funeral ceremony will be held Thursday at 11 am. A veteran theater artiste, Rajan P Dev had won state award for the best theater actor in 1984 and 86. Among several plays he acted, 'Kaattukuthira' was prominent one, which was, in fact, a turning point in his life. Dev immortalised the character Kochu Vava in the hit play "Kattukuthira" that was staged over a thousand times across Kerala.

In a career spanning close to three decades, he acted in about 180 films, including those in Tamil, Telegu and Kannada. It was his unique ability to add humor to villainous characters. Dev's last film was "Ee Patanathil Bhootham", starring superstar Mammootty, which is currently running in theatres.

Bhootham magic on Box office

As expected and predicted by the trade pundits 'Ee Pattanathil Bhootham' - the monsoon release from Mammootty witnessed bumper initials in the first two weeks. The film which was released in sixty five plus centers and collect around two and a half crores from its 14 days run. It registered 100% percent in almost all the centers in weekends & above sixty percent in week days, Even though the film carried mixed reports. Script writer uadaykrishna, Sibi.K.Thomas and director Johny Anthony has managed to make a formula film that uses Mammootty's larger-than- life image in the double role of Jimmy and Ghost , with proper mastery.

‘Palery’ resumes at Mancheri

Megastar Mammootty was more than happy to be at Manchery, where he had been for long doing his duties as a lawyer. The actor, who established himself as a popular advocate at Malappuram before starting his acting career, was again at his familiar den for the shooting of the new movie 'Palery Manikyam' 'Oru Pathira Kolapathakathinte Kathaa'. The production crew, including the producer-director Renjith, were also happy for the rains which stood away from disturbing their proceedings, from the day the megastar joined the sets. Hundreds of people from various walks of life assembled to see their favourite star and man of the soil, who is back to Mancheri after some years.

The megastar is in a double role in this movie which is an investigation thriller. One of his roles is of Haridas, a Delhi-based private detective who mets with a renewed interest about a murder that happened 50 years ago. He decides to reinvestigate it; with the help of Sarayu Sharma (played by Gowri) a criminologist who assists him.

The movie produced by Varnachithra big Screen and AVA Productions, will reach the theatres by the mid of November.

Mammootty launches reality show for fresh talent

Malayalam superstar Mammootty, who promised to launch fresh faces through his recently launched production company Play House, has started a talent hunt show in search of new faces.

The reality show titled "Mammootty, The Best Actor Award 2009", went on air on Asianet TV Saturday.

"Sixteen contestants have been selected and each of them will have to perform on the reality show. This is just to give talented youngsters an opportunity to come out," said the three-time national award winning actor.

Among the 16 selected, 10 are men and most of the participants are in their early 20s. They were shortlisted from among more than 1,000 aspirants.

There will 13 episodes that would be telecast every Saturday. The grand finale will take place in October in Dubai where Mammootty will announce the winners.

Yesteryears actress Sheela, ace comedian Jagathy Sreekumar along with Urvasi, Sreenivasan, Nedumudi Venu and popular director Siddique are judging the show.

Mammootty is the chairman of the Communist Party of India-Marxist backed Kairali TV, but he launched his reality show on a competitor's channel. Asked why he did so, the superstar laughed and said: "The proposal came from Asianet and I felt it was a good idea and agreed.

"My job in the reality show is limited. Since it was the first episode that was aired last night (Saturday), I decided to be present. I have committed that the films produced by my production house will feature many contestants," said the actor who is known for his powerful performances in movies like "Aalkootathil Thaniye", "Adiyozhukkukal", "Oru CBI Diary Kurippu", "Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha" and "Mathilukal".

Ranjith's new film
'Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathira Kolapathakathinte Katha,' is based on
T.P. Rajeevan's novel of the same name.

The monsoon, which has been lashing Malabar for over a fortnight now,
shows no sign of easing off. But the show has to go on in tinsel town.
So an unperturbed Ranjith makes changes in his shoot for 'Paleri
Manikyam: Oru Pathira Kolapathakathi
nte Katha,' his first film after the critically acclaimed 'Thirakkatha.'
"Ideally I would have loved to shoot the portion we are filming now
on a bright day and the flashback in the rain, but now most of the film
could be against the backdrop of the monsoon, which might look good on
screen," Ranjith says.
It did look interesting on the monitor. A bespectacled Mammootty and
a simply attired Gouri Munjal are joined by Hareendranath Eyyad, one of
the 40 debutants Ranjith is introducing to Malayalam cinema in this
film.

Acting workshop

The director had chosen these artistes after a prolonged camp for theatre persons that was conducted in Kozhikode.
"I feel that Malayalam cinema could do with more talented character
artistes. And I needed fresh faces to portray some key characters in
'Paleri Maniyam'; I didn't want to cast established film actors because
viewers might have preconceived notions about the kind of character
he/she was portraying," explains Ranjith.
"And the new artistes – only a few of them have begun working in the
film – have lived up to my expectations. They seem to have benefited
from the excellent workshop by leading actors and directors in
Malayalam cinema," adds the director.

Hareendranath seems a little nervous in front of the camera. He
needs to be reminded several times by associate director Shankar
Ramakrishnan about intonation and pauses in his dialogues in the scene
with Mammootty and Gouri.
Mammootty plays Haridas, a Delhi-based private detective who becomes
curious about a murder of a young woman in Paleri, a village near
Kozhikode, and decides to investigate it, more than 50 years after the
crime was committed.
Gouri who is making her debut in Malayalam cinema after starring in
films in other South Indian languages (notably 'Bunny' in Telugu),
plays Sarayu Sharma, a criminologist who assists Haridas in his
investigations.
Ranjith decides to shoot a scene in a hotel in the heart of
Kozhikode city. The action takes place in the bar. Haridas is trying to
extract information from Pallippuram, whose play was being staged on
the night the woman, Manikyam, was murdered in the village, five
decades ago. The scene is shot from several angles; there is also a
round trolley shot. Ranjith calls 'cut' only after a few takes.
And he tells you how 'Paleri Manikyam – Oru Pathira
Kolapathakathinte Katha' was born: "The film is based on T.P.
Rajeevan's novel, by the same name, which was serialised in a Malayalam
weekly. I was fascinated by the novel's theme, which is based on a true
incident that happened shortly before the first ministry of Kerala was
sworn in. After discussions with Rajeevan, I made a few changes while
writing the script. Initially, my plan was to make the film with a cast
of newcomers, but during a telephone conversation, Mammootty said he
would do the film, when I mentioned the commercial benefits of having a
mainstream star to play the male lead."
Debutante Mythili is Manikyam. The cast includes Shwetha Menon,
Srinivasan, Siddique and Suresh Krishna. Manoj Pillai cranks the
camera. Stills are by Paul Bathery.
'Paleri Manikyam…,' which will reach cinemas in November, is being
produced by Maha Subair and A.V. Anoop, under the banners of
Varnachithra Big Screen and A.V.A. Productions.
"Like most producers I too have always wanted to make films that do
well at the box office, but I have also tried to ensure that my films
boast artistic values as well. I am proud of films such as
'Thirakkatha,' 'Manassinakkare,' and 'Meesa Madhavan,'" says Subair.

Gowry is Mammootty's heroine

Gowry Munjal who became famous through the Allu Arjun movie 'Bunny' is foraying into Mollywood. She will have a proud opening in Malayalam, as the heroine to Mammootty in the new movie that is in the sets 'Palery Maanikyam.

The super star is playing twin roles, including that of a CBI Officer in this period thriller directed by Renjith. Apart from Mammootty and Gowry, all others in the cast are relatively new faces, who has been selected after big screening sessions.

Gowry, who is looking forward to more meaningful movies in Mollywood, had been the heroine to Shivarajkumar and Ajay in films like 'Gandana Mane' and 'Jaaji Mallige'.

‘Pramaani’ with Mammootty

Scriptwriter turned director B Unnikrishann had been lucky enough to convert all his movies to safe earners. While his Suresh Gopi flicks like 'Smart City' and the recent 'IG' managed with average collections, his Mohanlal movie 'Madambi' was one of the biggest hits of last year.

Anyhow, B Unnikrishann is now getting ready to start the works on his first movie with Mammootty. This project, which will be the fourth movie from the director is titled as 'Pramaani'.

Mammootty will appear as a corrupt Panchayath president Raghavapanikkar in this movie. Planned to start its shoot by the end of this year, the movie will also feature Suraaj Venjaaramodu, Jagathy, Nedumudi and Salimkumar.

Expected to get completed in a single schedule, this movie will get into theatres by MARCH 2010

Sibi and Mammootty again

After almost a decade from their last movie 'Saagaram Saakshy',Director Sibi Malayil will team up with Superstar Mammootty by next year. This yet to be titled movie will be in the scripts of K Gireshkumar, who shot to limelight with the movie 'Veruthe Oru Bharya'. K Gireeshkumar had been with Sibi Malayil for many films like 'Alice In Wonderland', and 'Amritham' which were all duds at the box Office.

This yet to be titled project is expected to kick off by the opening months of 2010 and will be the Onam release from the star.

Mammootty in ‘Chattambinaadu’

After the super hits like ‘Mayavi’ and ‘Thommanum Makkalum’, Mammootty and director Shafi are teaming up once again to create another super hit. Titled ‘Chattambinaadu’, this will be a comedy based action movie made in the scripts of Benny P Nayarambalam.

Mammootty will be presented as Veerendra Mallaya, a Karnataka based estate owner. He will speak a Kannada based new accent in this movie, which will be one of the highlights of the movie.

‘Chattambinaadu’ will feature three heroines for Mammootty. Mukesh will also play an important character in the movie. Produced by Mammootty's own distribution house “Playhouse”, the movie will start its shoot by the end of September.

‘Daddy Cool’ ready for this 31

Mammootty's next movie lined up for release will be debutante director Aashiq Abu's ‘Daddy Cool’. The movie produced by Ananya films and distributed by Marikar films will get to theaters by the 31st of this Month.

A family thriller based on a story by the director, ‘Daddy Cool’ will narrate the cool life of Antony Simon, a police officer, his wife and their cricket loving child Aadi.

As the big festival of Onam comes up on the fourth week of August which also coincides with Ramzan days, no other big releases will attempt to get to theaters. So ‘Daddy Cool’ will make a release three weeks before Ramzan month and will continue in theatres as an Onam release of the star.

Blessy again with Mammootty

After ‘Bhramaram’ Blessy is back again but this time in the role of a script writer. First time he pens for another director, Thomas Sebastian, the director of Maya Bazaar. The director could grab the dates of mega star Mammootty once more, even after his not so impressive debutant venture. Preliminary discussion of the movie is already held and Blessy will start the script work once he completes the promo programs of his own ‘Bhramaram’. Shooting date will be decided once the script is completed and currently Mammootty is busy with ‘Paleri Manikkam’.

Rains pour, collections sore:box office top 5

The unprecedented heavy rains that the state has
been witnessing for the last couple of days had marred the prospects of
many new movies at the Box Office. With the superstar movies like 'Ee
Pattanathil Bhootham' and 'Bhramaram' in the fray, the BO was expecting
interesting collections all over for at least a couple of weeks. But
with the heavy rains and floods that had its say at many parts of the
state, the opening collections dip low in the last few days. On
Thursday and Friday, most of the theatres could hardly manage the show
with less than forty percent collections.
Any how, the top five movies at the Box office are

1. Ee Pattanathil Bhootham - This
effects-heavy movie has indeed started with a surprising opening which
persisted for the first four days, after which the houses are
registering a dip at sixty percent. The movie has already changed its
marketing tactics with children now at the end of target points. Let us
have to wait for another couple of week to say how this five crore
adventure, will finally fare at the Box office.

2. Bhramaram - The movie from
Blessy has ignited good reviews and discussions and is widely opined as
one of the best seen in recent times. But in its third week the movie
is witnessing heavy fall in collections with some small stations even
shifting for new Tamil movies.

3. Ivar Vivaahitharaayal
- The debut movie from Saji Surendran, in its fifth week has surprised
everyone with the steady collections that it had in the first three
weeks, though this week was pathetic for this movie too. The movie is
already declared as a hit, in fact the first solo hit for it lead hero
Jayasuriya.

4. Bhagyadevatha
- This already declared hit 'Bhagyadevatha' is nearing its hundred day
run in four theatres in the state. The movie also receive good
collections from shifting centres.

5. Passenger
- The surprise hit from Dileep - Sreenivasan team is in its 75 days.
The movie continues its run in three centres. The shifting centres also
shows interesting collections.
The week though immersed in heavy rains will have
the new flicks like 'Winter' and 'Puthiya Mukham', which is expected to
make a better opening. Also in the theatres are Tamil movies like
'Vamanan' and 'Thoranai', and Hindi movie 'Kambakkht Ishq' and Newyork'.

Mammootty's Daddy Cool on July 30!

Mammootty's new film Daddy Cool, written and directed by debutant Ashik Abu has confirmed its release date as July 30.
There is only a gap of three weeks between Pattanathil Bhootham and another commercial children film of the megastar Daddy Cool!
It is a cool, humorous and thrilling story of a laidback police officer Antony Simon played by Mammootty, who is very fond of his six year old son and likes to play cricket and laze around with him than attending office!
Richa Palod is playing Mammootty's heroine in this film, which also has Vijayraghavan, Baburaj, and Biju Menon. Production Manager Alvin Antony and Bose Kurian are making the film under the banner of Aninya Films and is distributed by Marakkar films.
Daddy Cool will be marketed as Mammootty's Onam release even though the festival is in the first week of September. Please note Noyambu (Ramzan fasting) period starts on August 21, so the film will get a clean three weeks run before that.

‘Bhootham’ makes a good start

Erasing all the doubts about its commercial success, Mammootty's latest movie 'Ee Pattanathil Bhootham' has made a flying start at in almost all the centres in Kerala.

The weekend shows were almost full in every centres. As the big fans of the star has already completed their first viewing, the makers will market the movie more as a children and family genre from the week two, which will make sure the at the movie will survive with its initials for at least another two weeks. And the movie is expected to bring its capital amounts spend on it in another three weeks, if the movie survive with this collections.

Pattanthil Bhootham -Review

Mammootty's recently released 'Ee Pattanathil Bhootham's director Johnny Antony can derive satisfaction from his work. After all, in his second flick with the mega star,the much hyped E Pattaanthil bhootham the Fantasy thriller ,Johny has succeeded in fashioning a film that caters to the palate of not only Mammootty fans but others as well.The best thing about 'E Pattaanthil Bhootham' is that it has no pretensions to being a serious movie. The intent is clearly to entertain child. And the film is eminently successful in that mission. You leave the theatre in a happy-go-lucky frame of mind after watching the movie made under the commercial masala format for childrens.

The story is about a friendly ghost's relation with Jimmy who is a bike jumper in a Circus and how the ghost helps him to solve some crisis in Jimmy's life.Other characters are Ancy (Kavya) , daughter of circus manager Philipose (Janaradhanan), Jimmy's foster father Krishnettan (Innocent), friend Sisupalan ( Suraaj) etc..Mammootty carries the film on his broad shoulders single-handedly. It is a Mammootty show all the way, particularly in comic scenes, even his sound for ghost is better in some parts and failed in some time.

The supporting cast comprising Suraj Venjaramude, Innocent and Salim Kumar, plays the second fiddle competently. Kavya has nothing much to do except appear beautiful in fancy clothes and act coy.the other cast like Rajan P Dev, Suresh Krishna, Undda Pakru & Bindu Panicker as usual performed well.
Script by Sibi.K.Thomas - Uday Krishna lacks luster and is even presented with less believability. But the festival moods all through and added masalas will definitely bring in good numbers of takers which is evident before all release centers now. Shan Rehman's music meshes well with the mood of levity that animates the movie. Utpal V Nayanar's , contribution with visuals suit for the fantasy movie. The highlight of the film is the brisk pace & colorful presentation by which the director Johny Antony passes through the events without lending time to think about the other loopy crass.

Verdict: Go For Child!

Mammootty's website gets more interactive

Kochi (IANS): Malayalam superstar
Mammootty's website is set to get a new look, have more interactive
features and would include a blood bank service too.

The veteran actor said it could now be
called a portal and not just a website as www.mammootty. com is more
exhaustive than before.

"The highlight of the re-launched site
is that it would be more interactive. Besides, it would offer a slew of
community services that include a blood bank where anyone wanting blood
can log on to the site. Through this one can find out the person in his
or her locality who would be willing to provide blood. This blood bank
will be operated with the help of my fans' association, " Mammootty told
IANS.

The National Award winning actor will officially re-launch the website here Sunday evening.

The new portal will have an elaborate
interactive forum for his fans apart from details about the star and
his upcoming projects. But won't this give people a platform to write
negative views as well?

"See, freedom of expression need not be
curbed... and let anyone write what they want. I am sure only when the
freedom of expression is there, I can do introspection. So let people
write and express themselves," Mammootty said.

The re-launch of the website comes just
ahead of his new film's release. "Pattanathil Bhootham", a much-awaited
entertainer, releases later this week.

"I am certainly happy with the film but
then it is the audience who have to do the rest. My hands are full with
two more (movies) in the final stages of production and 'Pazhazzi
Raja', a mega film, is also slated for release during Ramadan," said
Mammootty, who has worked in over 300 films.

The actor recently turned producer and distributor too with the launch of his production company called Play House last month.

Mammootty Inaugurates Heart Foundation

A
charity foundation has started under the guidance of Mamootty named
'Care and Share International Foundation' for helping the poor
children suffering from heart disease, based at Kochi. Children below
12 years of age from Kerala and Lakshadweep would get help from this
scheme. In the first step hundred children would get benefit. For
those who need surgery will be carried at Sree Chithira Thirunal
hospital at Thiruvananthapuram, MIMS at Kozhikode and Amritha Institute
at Eranakulam. The foundation has signed MoU with these Hospitals. As
a start of this programme each hospital will carry surgery today
(Thursday) for one child. Foundation would spare Rs. One lakh for each
surgery. It will receive donations from interested persons to serve
the purpose. The selection process of children will be done under the
guidance of doctors from a panel. The foundation was inaugurated by
Mamootty at Kumbala Ramada resort in Kochi on Wednesday. Those who

A heroic return for Sasikumar

KOCHI:
Sasikumar, the man who revolutionised the Malayalam television industry
with the launch of Asianet, has turned actor with the Jayaraj-directed
film, `Loudspeaker.´ The movie, starring Mammootty in the key role, has
Sasikumar playing the role of Menon, a rich man befriended by
Mammootty´s character `Mike.´ The film revolves around the bond that
develops between the two and its aftermath."It was Mammootty who
first told me about the role and asked me to do it. I thought he was
kidding but he insisted. I read the script and liked it enough to give
it a try. I play a person who returns to his Valluvanadan village after
decades," says Sasikumar, the founder chairman of the Asianet group and
currently the director of the Asian school of Journalism.Though
he has appeared in front of the camera umpteen times for shows and
interviews, acting in a mainstream film proved to be quite a thing
apart."I just hope it will turn out well. Acting was not difficult, mainly because Mammootty and Jayaraj made me really comfortable. I saw the rushes of some scenes and they looked good," says Sasikumar.He has set aside one month for the shooting which is fast progressing in Thrissur.According to Jayaraj the role required an `executive look-alike´ and Sasikumar fitted the profile perfectly.Interesti ngly,
Sasikumar had a stint in acting when he was cast in the lead role in
the film "Iniyum Marichittillatha Nammal,´ directed by Chintha Ravi
(Ravindran)."Ravi is a good friend of mine and he wanted me to
don the hero´s role. It was an off-beat film. I did it as a token of
our friendship, more to be in the company of all my friends." Though
there were offers from Shyamaprasad and Sreenivasan earlier, Sasikumar
said `no´ to all of them. "I do not want to be active in films. There
are many things left to be done in my job," says Sasikumar.

Ee Pattanathil Bootham Movie Review

Johny Antony, created a brand in the Malayalam Industry with his comedy entertainers. He is coming back with the Megastar Mammootty in his latest movie Pattanathil Bootham. The movie is of an adventure tales which attracts both kids and elders.

An evil magician gets the power over a bhootham (ghost) and uses for filthy activites. The magicina losts the bhootham and gets it into the hands of children in a circus tent. The story flows around the things which happends in the circus tent. Mammootty does a double role, as Bhootham and as Jimmy, the circus stunt man.Another importance of the film is that, Kavyya Madhavan's maiden film released after her marriage and doing a limited role in the film.

Johny Antony introduced special effects to make the movie a complete family entertainer. Comedy kings Suraj and Salim is also doing important rolwe in the film. Due to post production delay, the release of the movie is postponed from April - May. We can expect another success from the John Antony - Mammootty team.

Mammootty for another double role

In an interesting development, the makers of Palery Maanikyam - a Pathira Kolapathakinte Katha, has finally made it clear that Mammootty will be playing a double role in the movie.

The superstar will be in the roles of a CBI officer who is re investigating the crime in the present day and also as a Muslim landlord, who was involved in the original crime in the late fifties. The movie which is based on a serialised novel which appeared in a popular weekly, is on the Manikkam murder case which rocked the state in fifties. The movie making has been in the news for quite some time as the makers were conducting workshops for a month to train the fresh actors appearing in the movie. The shoot for the movie will kick off by the third of July.

Another shift for ‘Bhootham’

The play with the fantasy 'Bhootham' is costing much time for its makers. As the final works on the graphics is still on, the creators of the new movie 'Pattanathil Bhootham' is still finding it difficult, to get the movie released on time.

As per the latest reports this magical entertainer will get into theatres only by the 9th of this month, instead of the last announced date of second of July.

The movie, a conceptual brainchild of super star Mammootty, will feature him in double roles in the scripts of Sibi K Thomas -Udhay Krissna duo. Directed by Johny Antony, the movie is planning a wide release by the end of next week.

Paleri Manikkam to start rolling!

Mammootty's Paleri Manikkam, directed by Ranjit is to start in Moogambika temple on July 3. The film is a period crime thriller of a CBI officer who investigates a case which happened in the late 50's!
The film is based on a story serialised in Mathrubhumi weekly in the
early 60's written by T.P Rajeevan. The story is based on the
sensational Manikkam murder case that rocked Kerala in the 50's.
What makes the film interesting is that Mammootty will play a dual role
as the CBI officer who re- investigates the case in 2009 and a feudal
Muslim landlord who lived in the 50's and involved in the crime. There
is no relationship between both the characters.

Writer and director Ranjit has taken all new actors, mainly people from the theatre to play important characters in the film. All
of them have been undergoing a one month training camp in Kozhikode on
how to act on the screen! The courses were conducted by Murali Menon
and Ranjit.
The important character of Manikkam will be played by the stage artist
Mythali. Ranjit has also made changes in Rajeevan's original story to
suit the taste of today's audiences.
The others in the cast are Sreenivasan, Vijayraghavan, Siddique and
Sadiq. New cinematographer Prakash Kutty will be the cameraman, while
music is by Biji Bal.

The film is being produced by K.V Anoop and Subair under the banner of Varnachitra Big Screen.
