The National Award declarations for the year 2009 has left lovers of good cinema stunned!
Amitabh Bachchan who did the lead role of a 12 year old boy with progeria has bagged the Best Actor award.
Amitabh has done a commendable role indeed in the film directed by Balki, but what has raised many eye brows is that he has overridden three stupendous performances by Mammootty in Malayalam.
Last year Mammootty had donned the role of Pazhassi Raja in the Hairharan directed magnum opus, had wowed critics and the public alike with his triple role in Ranjith's 'Palery Manickyam' and had delivered yet another whopping feat in Shaji N Karun's 'Kutti Srank'.
Rarely has there been such unanimous opinion among the general public when it comes to adjudging the best performances of the year. With three magnificent performances from Mammootty and with very little competition around, the actor seemed all set to win the National Award for a fourth time.
As much as Amitabh's performance is to be appreciated, it cannot be forgotten that his very role in 'Paa' speaks more of the craftsmanship of the makeup man than the histrionic abilities of the actor.
Mammootty on the other hand has delivered three best performances in a single year, one after the other, and which are as distinct from one another as possible.
It therefore remains a mystery as to what had prompted the National Award jury members to take this decision. The film-going janta would really like an answer.
