Top 5

With another two week to Onam festival, the theatres in the state are registering good collections all over, with the arrival of some good entertainers. The top five of the week have definitely some surprises.

1. ‘Veruthe Oru Bharya’ - Within two weeks from its release, this Jayaram movie has slowly managed to grab the top position. The movie seems to have stricken a chord with the families and the lady viewers with its realistic content. ‘Veruthe Oru Bharya’ is the first major success for Pyramid Saimira - the media giant, which started to distribute films in Malayalam from this January.

2. ‘Aayudham’ – Suresh Gopi's latest ‘Aayudham’ has taken a lame start and is not expected to make any surprises at the box office. But the movie by Nishad may continue in theatres at least till the arrival of Onam flicks.

3. ‘Maadambi’ - Mohanlal's latest hit 'Maadambi' is in its 50 day. The movie continues to bring in viewers in around 15 release centers, of which 6 are regular shows. The movie has got strong collections in majority of the metro stations.

4. ‘Krishna’ - Allu Arjun's latest ‘Krishna’ couldn't repeat the success story of his previous films like ‘Arya’ and ‘Happy', that were also dubbed in Malayalam. The movie has got greater collections in the northern regions and in some centers the movie's first day collections was in par with that of some of our superstars films. But in the South, the movie got a cold response even after aggressive marketing from its distributor, Khadar Haasan.

5. ‘Kabadi Kabadi’ - Sudheer-Manu's ‘Kabadi Kabadi’ which is in its fourth week, continues in very few release theatres. The movie will, at best, end up as an average earner. The non performance of this reasonably entertaining stuff, poses serious questions to the present crowd pulling capacity of actors in its lead, like Mani and Mukesh.

Apart from the two new releases, 'Aakashagopuram’ and 'S M S’, the other movies in the theatres includes Sidhdharth Anand's ‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’, Rajinikanth’s ‘Kuselan’, Vishal's ‘Sathyam’ and Kamal's ‘Minnaminnikkoottam’.

'Twenty Twenty' to hit the screens by Oct.24

Twenty Twenty', perhaps the biggest of all multi-starrers, which is produced by AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists) and directed by Joshi, has been getting delayed on and on. (Of course it's quite natural for the film to get delayed, owing to the presence of so many busy artists in the cast!)

Many release dates have already been announced and the release has been postponed many times already.

Now the news is that the film, scripted by Sibi K. Thomas and Udayakrishna and featuring almost all leading stars in Malayalam, is finally to hit the screens this October. The date too has been given out as October 24th.

The film will be brought to the theatres by Kalasangham and Grand Release. It's also heard that the distributors have plans to get the film released in 90 theatres across the state.

Mammootty's Maya Bazaar in full swing!

After Parinthu failed to take off, Mammootty is putting all hopes on
Maya Bazaar, a rollicking entertainer. Mammootty knows that shades of
grey in his character worked against the Padmakumar film.

So this time the character that he is doing in Thomas Sebastin
directed Maya Bazaar 'Akkiri' Ramesh who deals in old cars and
dismantling them is going to be a Robinhood type role. Remember his
fans do not like him experimenting in commercial cinema.

The shooting of the film is going on in full swing in Pollachi. The
other artists in the film are Sooraj Venjaranmoodu, Rajan.P.Dev,
Salim Kumar, Innocent and heroine is new girl Sheela.

Mammootty has given bulk dates and would wrap up the entire shoot in
40 days, and the film will start its post production work in the
first week of September.

The film is scheduled to release for Ramzan on October 1 or 2.

Lineup for a lackluster Onam

This year the filmi Onam in Mollywood will be a lackluster one with no participation of super star films. In fact, this is the first Onam season in the history of Mollywood, when the reigning superstars are not able to bring up at least a movie for the season.

Due to the coinciding of Ramzan days with the Onam season, majority of the big banners have shifted their big releases to Id day, which will come after three weeks from Onam. This leaves the theatres with either small banner films or films from lesser known heroes, for Onam.

The important ones that are expected to be on theatres for this Onam are Mohanlal’s K P Kumaran movie 'Aakasha Gopuram', which is a thorough offbeat venture, releasing next week. Jayaram's ‘Parthan Kanda Paralokam’, Vinoo Mohan's ‘Sultan’, Robin Thirumala's ‘Chembada’ and ‘Thavalam’ from Suresh Gopi are also in the final touch ups to get into theatres for Onam. Prithviraj will have two releases for this Onam that includes Madhupal's 'Thalappavu' and Renjith's 'Thirakkatha'.

Renjith's 'Thirrakkatha' is expected to be the dark horse of this Onam, as this is the only film from the lot which is planned with a refreshing story and commercially viable threads. Featuring Priyamani, Samvrutha and Anoop Menon, the movie will clash for the top slot with Vinoo Mohan's third film 'Sultan' which also carry good post production reports.

‘Twenty :20’ for October

AMMA's magnum opus 'Twenty: 20’ is planning to grace the theatres by the end of October. The actual release date of the film, distributed by Kalasangham and Grand releases, is not yet confirmed.

But the latest reports suggest that the movie will make into theatres by the last week of October, granting the Ramzan releases enough time to cash in their initial collections. The movie which features all the leading artists in the Mollywood business is expected to make the biggest release of all times, at least in 95 theatres.

One of the major problems that AMMA faced was that 'Twenty: 20’ may affect the prospects of the other star films that have originally fixed their release dates.

And if ‘Twenty: 20’ is to clash with any of these films planned for Onam and Ramzan, chances are that other films may not survive in this box office storm that will be stirred off by this multistarrer. Now that the film is finalized for the last week of October, superstar films like ‘Mayabazaar’ and ‘Kurukshetra’ will go for a wide release for Ramzan, to collect the maximum in these three weeks available before ‘Twenty:20'.

'Maya Bazar' to be a Ramzan release

Meet Ramesh, known popularly as 'Akkiri' Ramesh (Akkiri means scrap). Ramesh's business is buying old and discarded vehicles, dismantling them and selling off the parts at a cheap price. He operates out of an area called Maya Bazaar.

'Akkiri' Ramesh is the name of the character Mammootty plays in Maya Bazaar, directed by debutante Thomas Sebastian, who earlier had been an associate to Sibi Malayil, Sunder Das and Blessy.

The film, which is nearing completion, is being produced by Sachi S. Mangalam under the banner of Akhil Films, and features script penned jointly by the director Thomas Sebastian and Govind Vijayan. Maya Bazaar has two lead ladies - Bollywood star Tisca Chopra and Tamil-Telugu actress Sheela.

Rajan P. Dev plays the hero's father while the cast also includes Salim Kumar, Suraaj Venjaramoodu, Nedumudi Venu, Innocent, Bijukuttan etc. Prakash Raj plays the villain in the film.

Maya Bazaar will be released during Ramzan.

Top 5

Top five movies of the week

1. ‘Kuselan’: Rajinikanth's new movie 'Kuselan' opened up in theatres with usual enthusiasm and spirit, registering full houses all around Kerala. The movie released in eighty one centers, has the phenomenal Rajini factor working wonders. The curiosity around how the remake of an original super hit in Malayalam has shaped up will also ensure a fantastic couple of weeks for the movie. The movie also have got a good word-of-mouth.

2. ‘Maadambi’: The movie's good show at the box office has brought smiles on the face Mohanlal who was down with a number of flops in the last six months. Though fallen to the number two position with the arrival of ‘Kuselan’, the movie registers 85 percent collections in weekends. The heavy rains had its toll on the movie, which has reduced the audience incoming in some centers. Anyway the movie is moving up to the status of a super hit.
3. ‘Minnaminnikoottam’: Kamal's ‘Minnaminnikkoottam' remains steady with audiences. As the film enters its fourth week, the collections in the metros are really good and families have started acknowledging the movie as a good family hit. With the steady audiences in all the important centers, the movie will end up from an average earner to a decent hit.

4. ‘Kabadi Kabadi’: The new Kalabahavan Mani-Mukesh starrer has opened up in the forth position. The movie has plenty of slapstick comedies and a reasonably new storylines. The director duo Sudheer Manu, coupled with Suraj Venjaramoodu and co have succeeded in creating continuous humorous sequences, all through the movie ‘Kabadi Kabadi’ is expected to fare better than the recent films from the second level heroes.

5. ‘Parunthu’: This Mammootty starrer remains the weakest in collections, while entering its third week. Though the film has been removed from about half of the release centers, the fantastic three - day opening, and big release strategy has paid off. The movie managed to end up as an average earner only due to its release hypes.

The other movies in theatres include Suresh Gopi's ‘Laptop’, Kamal's 'Dasavathaaram’, and a few English movies like forbidden kingdom which manage to fill the remaining of the release centers with average collections.

Love in Singapore or Cowboy

Rafi-Mecartin Project Love in Singapore title may be changed to Cowboy, says report in kerala kaumudi newspaper. but latest velli retains the Love in Singapore title.
M appears as an AKRI trader who finally lands in share business and becomes pretty rich; but retains the akri culture. .
the shoot starts in october and release is in january 2009. after a long time nedumudy venu joins ikka apart from rajan p dev, lalu alex, salim kumar, harishree ashokan, and suraj venjarammoodu. search is on for heroine. (velli)
Maya Bazzar is expected to be over by mid-august. after that ikka may join kutty sranku in tvm and later on will join Pazhassi final schedule (Coorg) in which M will finish his part of the film. then starts Love in Singapore. Pattanathil Bhootham to start in January in Palakkad. release is in Vishu 2009. (Nana) vishu seems to be interesting as competition will be from Siddique's Dileep film.

vandae mahtharam

Mammootty's multilingual movie Vande Matharam, will hit the screens
by Xmas time this year.
The big budget movie shot in many long schedules will complete its
last schedule which was postponed due to some legal issues in a short
time.

The big budget movie is being released all across South India to bank
on the star value of both Mammootty and Arjun, with as many as 550
prints. This would be a rare event, if the plan of the distributor
materializes. The producers are trying hard to release it in Kerala,
Tamilnadu and Andhra on the same day. If the film makes profit in the
south Indian box office, there are plans to release in Hindi also.

The movie has been shot in multiple schedules and was earlier planned
as a Monsoon release. But ill planned schedules and poor management
has dragged it on by a few more months, over shooting the estimated
budget by quite a margin.

Vande Matharam will be the biggest budgeted movie in the Malayalam if
Mohanlal's NairSan doesn't opt a Malayalam version.

Parunthu' is not a letdown - Padmakumar

'Parunthu' was not planned as an answer to 'Maadambi', which came up
with some dialogues against `Parunthu'. There were some pressures
from fans associations to include some dialogues to counter the ones
in the latter allegedly targeted against the film. But I preferred
not to stop low and add something that would in no way enhance the
thematic content of 'Parunthu', said Padmakumar in a press meet at
Kozhikkode.

"More over I am pretty happy with the film that was created entirely
from my creative point of view. The movie even brought in more than a
crore to its producers in the opening week'

Padmakumar further points out that cutting production costs is the
only way to help the industry to survive. He is also happy that
Mammootty, his hero in the film gave him all liberties to create a
free hand character who is negative to the core. ''Not many
superstars could have agreed in doing such a character'' notes
Padmakumar.

The director also made it a point to announce that his next film will
also feature Mammootty in the lead. "When I met him at Pollachi, last
week, he told me that he was pleased with 'Parunthu'. "I hope to
start the new film by the first months of next year. This movie will

'Love In Singapore' to start by October

Mammootty has made a major change in his shoot schedules by agreeing
to start his new film with Rafi Mecartin, at an earlier date. The
movie project titled 'Love In Singapore' is likely to start by the
first week of October, as per his present plans. This means that
Johnny Antony's `Pattanathil Bhootham' is likely to start only by the
first week of December.

Mammootty in the next four months to December will complete all his
pending films like `Mayabazaar' , `Twenty Twenty','Vande Matharam',
`Kutty Shranku' and `Pazhassi Raja', before starting 'Pattanathil
Bhootham'. If last minutes delays in the shoot of these films occur,
then `Love In Singapore' will also get delayed to start.

Directed by Rafi Mecartin, the super hit directors of Mollywood in
their own scripts 'Love In Singapore' will present Mammootty as
`Aakry Machu' - a man who cuised to the lanes of financial heights
starting his life as a scrap dealer. The makers are planning to
introduce a villain and a new heroine through this movie.

'Love In Singapore' which will also feature Suraj Venjaramoodu,
Salimkumar, Harishree Ashokan, Rajan P Dev, Lalu Alex, and Nedumudi
Venu will be shot at Kochy and Karakudi. Some parts of the movie will
also be shot at Singapore.

'Love In Singapore' to be produced in the banner of M H M productions
will be one of the first releases of Mammootty in the early months of
January 2009, brought to the theatres by Vaishakha Release.
