'Doubles' progresses at Pondicherry

The Sohan Seenulal directed 'Doubles' that stars Mammootty and Nadia Moithu as twins started its shoot at Pondicherry.

'Doubles' is being shot at a bungalow at Kundaloor road that is about five kilometers away from the city. P Sukumar is the cinematographer.

Thapasi would be the heroine. Suraj, Salim Kumar, Saiju Kurup, Anoop Chandran, Abu Salim and Jaya Menon would lend support.

'Doubles' would be produced by K K Narayandas under the banner of Reels on Wheels.

'Pokkiriraja' is the biggest in 2010

As 2010 is finally drawing to a close, the winner at the Box office is clear. 'Pokkiriraja', the debut film from Vysakh,
featuring Mammootty and Prithviraj is undoubtedly the biggest hit of the year in Mollywood. The movie which was made with
a budget of 6.25 crores including print and publicity, (75 lakhs for print and publicity) has raked in an income of 10.7
crores to its producer Tomichan Mulakupadam,from various sources. The movie got 2.3 crores as satellite rights while the
producer share came to around 6.3 crores.

Apart from Pokkrirraja, the other big hits of the year include 'Happy Husbands' from Saji Surendran, 'Pappy Appacha' from
Dileep directed by debutante Mamas, 'Prachiyettan and the Saint' by Renjith, 'In Ghosthouse Inn' by Lal and 'Elsamma enna
Aankutty' by Laljose. All these movies managed a 100-day run in city centres and made profits for their producers.

There is a big list of hit movies, this year including Mohanlal's 'Shikkar' directed by Padmakumar,'Malarvady Arts Club'
by Vineeth Sreenivasan,'Karyasthan' by Thomson, ' Apoorva Raagam' by Sibi Malayil, 'Mummy and me' by Jithu Joseph, 'Katha
thudarunnu' by Sathyan Anthikkad,'Marykkundoru Kunjaadu 'by Shafi, 'Best actor' directed by Martin Prakkat,'Bodyguard' by
Siddhique, 'Cocktail' by Arun kumar and 'Sakudumbam Shyamala' by Radhakrishanan Managalathu.(the last two getting into the
list due to their low cost of production)

The upset flops of the year includes Saji surendran's 'Four friends', Mohanlal's 'Alexander the great', and Mammootty's
'Vande Matharam'.The biggest number of flops came from Suresh Gopi and Vinoo Mohan whose films not even managed to make a
good start in 2010.

Ranjith and Mammootty to remake 'Arappatta Kettiya Gramathil'?

There are unconfirmed reports that director Ranjith and Megastar Mammootty are planning a remake of the Padmarajan classic 'Arappatta Kettiya Gramathil'.

The news has been received with much ovation by the film lovers of the state, since the original film had remained a perennial favourite for a long time.

It was reported recently that Mamootty had expressed a desire to act in the remake of the film, in which he had played the role of Zacharia.

Ranjith seems to the apt director who would do justice to the classic film, and its likely that the film would turn out to be another treat for the viewers from the Ranjith-Mammootty combo.

2010 അവസാനിക്കുകയാണ്. ഇനി റിലീസാകാനുള്ള പ്രധാന മലയാള ചിത്രങ്ങള്‍ മേരിക്കുണ്ടൊരു കുഞ്ഞാട്, ടൂര്‍ണമെന്‍റ് എന്നിവ. ആ സിനിമകളുടെ വിധി അടുത്ത വര്‍ഷം ആദ്യമേ കൃത്യമായി നിര്‍വചിക്കാനാവൂ. അതൊഴിച്ച്, ഇതുവരെ ഈ വര്‍ഷം റിലീസായത് 88 മലയാള സിനിമകളാണ്. അവയില്‍ 20 സിനിമകള്‍ നിര്‍മ്മാതാക്കള്‍ക്ക് പണം സമ്പാദിച്ചുകൊടുത്തു.

ഈ വര്‍ഷത്തെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ഹിറ്റ് മെഗാസ്റ്റാര്‍ മമ്മൂട്ടിയും ബിഗ്സ്റ്റാര്‍ പൃഥ്വിരാജും ഒന്നിച്ച പോക്കിരിരാജയാണ്. 80 കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളില്‍ റിലീസായ പോക്കിരിരാജ 10 കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളില്‍ 70 ദിവസം തികച്ചപ്പോള്‍ രണ്ടിടത്ത് 100 ദിവസം ഓടി. 20 കോടിയിലധികം രൂപയാണ് തിയേറ്ററുകളില്‍ നിന്ന് ഈ സിനിമ വാരിക്കൂട്ടിയത്. മമ്മൂട്ടിയുടെ ഡാന്‍സും മുറി ഇംഗ്ലീഷും പൃഥ്വിരാജിന്‍റെ ആക്ഷനുമായിരുന്നു പോക്കിരിരാജയുടെ ഹൈലൈറ്റ്. നവാഗതനായ വൈശാഖ് ഈ സിനിമയിലൂടെ ഹിറ്റ്മേക്കര്‍മാരുടെ നിരയില്‍ ഇടം‌പിടിച്ചു.

നാലരക്കോടി രൂപ മുതല്‍മുടക്കില്‍ നിര്‍മ്മിച്ച ശിക്കാറാണ് ഈ വര്‍ഷത്തെ മറ്റൊരു ബോക്സോഫീസ് രാജാവ്. യൂണിവേഴ്സല്‍ സ്റ്റാര്‍ മോഹന്‍ലാലിന്‍റെ താരമൂല്യത്തിന്‍റെ പ്രഭയില്‍ രണ്ടാഴ്ചകൊണ്ട് എട്ടുകോടി രൂപയാണ് ഈ സിനിമയ്ക്ക് ഗ്രോസ് വന്നത്. റിലീസ് ചെയ്ത ആദ്യ ദിവസം ശിക്കാര്‍ നേടിയത് 1.29 കോടി രൂപയാണ്. ഇതൊരു സര്‍വകാല റെക്കോര്‍ഡാണ്. എം പത്മകുമാര്‍ സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത ശിക്കാറിന് പക്ഷേ ആദ്യത്തെ 25 ദിവസങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് ശേഷം കളക്ഷനില്‍ വന്‍ ഇടിവ് സംഭവിച്ചു.

പാപ്പി അപ്പച്ചാ എന്ന മെഗാഹിറ്റിലൂടെ ജനപ്രിയനായകന്‍ ദിലീപ് തിരിച്ചുവരവ് നടത്തിയ വര്‍ഷമാണ് 2010. അപ്രതീക്ഷിത വിജയമാണ് ഈ സിനിമ നേടിയത്. മൂന്നരക്കോടി രൂപ ചെലവിട്ട് നിര്‍മ്മിച്ച പാപ്പി 11 കോടി രൂപയാണ് ഗ്രോസ് നേടിയത്. കാവ്യാമാധവനും ഈ വിജയം ആശ്വാസം നല്‍കി. നവാഗതനായ മമാസാണ് ഈ സിനിമ സംവിധാനം ചെയ്തത്.

ലാല്‍ ജോസ് സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത 'എല്‍‌സമ്മ എന്ന ആണ്‍കുട്ടി' ഈ വര്‍ഷത്തെ കറുത്തകുതിരയായി. ആന്‍ അഗസ്റ്റിന്‍ നായികയായ ഈ സിനിമ അത്ഭുതപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന വിജയമാണ് കൈവരിച്ചത്. കുഞ്ചാക്കോബോബനും ഇന്ദ്രജിത്തിനും ഈ സിനിമയുടെ വിജയം പുതുജീവന്‍ നല്‍കി. വെറും ഒന്നരക്കോടി രൂപ മുതല്‍മുടക്കിയ എല്‍‌സമ്മ എട്ടുകോടിയോളം രൂപ തിയേറ്ററുകളില്‍ നിന്നുമാത്രം സമ്പാദിച്ചു. ലാല്‍ജോസ് ടച്ച് തന്നെയായിരുന്നു ഈ സിനിമയുടെ പ്രത്യേകത.

ജീത്തുജോസഫ് സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത 'മമ്മി ആന്‍റ് മി'യും സര്‍പ്രൈസ് ഹിറ്റായിരുന്നു. ഉര്‍വശിയും അര്‍ച്ചന കവിയും തകര്‍ത്തഭിനയിച്ച ഈ സിനിമ വിതരണം ചെയ്തത് മോഹന്‍ലാലാണ്. കുഞ്ചാക്കോബോബന്‍, മുകേഷ് എന്നിവര്‍ക്കും സിനിമയുടെ വിജയം ഗുണം ചെയ്തു. മനോഹരമായ പാട്ടുകള്‍ ഈ സിനിമയിലുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ഒന്നരക്കോടി ബജറ്റുള്ള ഈ സിനിമയും 7.5 കോടി രൂപ കളക്ഷന്‍ നേടി.

എന്നാല്‍ 2010ന്‍റെ സിനിമ ഏതാണെന്നു ചോദിച്ചാല്‍ അത് പ്രാഞ്ചിയേട്ടനല്ലാതെ മറ്റൊന്നുമല്ല. രഞ്ജിത് സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത പ്രാഞ്ചിയേട്ടന്‍ ആന്‍റ് ദി സെയിന്‍റ് മമ്മൂട്ടിയുടെ അഭിനയജീവിതത്തിലെ നാഴികക്കല്ലുകളില്‍ ഒന്നാണ്. 1.9 കോടി രൂപ ബജറ്റില്‍ രഞ്ജിത് തന്നെ നിര്‍മ്മിച്ച ഈ സിനിമ 80 ദിവസം കൊണ്ട് ആറുകോടിയിലേറെ കളക്ഷന്‍ നേടി. തിരുവനന്തപുരത്തും എറണാകുളത്തും തൃശൂരിലും പ്രാഞ്ചിയേട്ടന്‍ 100 ദിവസങ്ങള്‍ പിന്നിടുകയാണ്. മലയാള സിനിമയ്ക്ക് പുതിയൊരു കാലഘട്ടത്തിലേക്കുള്ള ചുവടുവയ്പ്പാണ് ഈ സിനിമ.

വിനീത് ശ്രീനിവാസന്‍ സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത മലര്‍വാടി ആര്‍ട്സ് ക്ലബാണ് ഈ വര്‍ഷത്തെ മറ്റൊരു പ്രധാന സിനിമ. ഒട്ടേറെ പുതുമുഖങ്ങളും പുതുമകളുമയി വന്ന ഈ ചിത്രം നിര്‍മ്മിച്ചത് ദിലീപാണ്. വന്‍ വിജയം കരസ്ഥമാക്കിയ ഈ സിനിമ മലയാള സിനിമയ്ക്ക് വിനീത് എന്ന മികച്ച സംവിധായകനെയും സമ്മാനിച്ചു. രണ്ടുകോടി രൂപ മുടക്കി നിര്‍മ്മിച്ച മലര്‍വാടി അഞ്ചുകോടിയോളം രൂപ കളക്ഷന്‍ നേടി.

2010 ജനുവരിയില്‍ റിലീസായ ഹാപ്പി ഹസ്ബന്‍ഡ്സ് എന്ന സിനിമ മെഗാവിജയം നേടി. സജി സുരേന്ദ്രന്‍ സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത ഈ മള്‍ട്ടിസ്റ്റാര്‍ സിനിമയുടെ ചെലവ് മൂന്നരക്കോടി രൂപയാണ്. 12 കോടി രൂപയിലധികം കളക്ഷന്‍ നേടിയ ഈ സിനിമ വീണ്ടും സ്ലാപ്സ്റ്റിക് കോമഡിയുടെ ജനപ്രീതി തെളിയിച്ചു. ജയറാമിനും ജയസൂര്യയ്ക്കും സുരാജ് വെഞ്ഞാറമ്മൂടിനും ഈ സിനിമ ഗുണമായി. എന്നാല്‍ സജിയുടെ അടുത്ത സിനിമ 'ഫോര്‍ ഫ്രണ്ട്സ്' ബോക്സോഫീസില്‍ തകര്‍ന്നടിയുകയും ചെയ്തു.

ലാല്‍ സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത 'ഇന്‍ ഗോസ്റ്റ് ഹൌസ് ഇന്‍' വമ്പന്‍ വിജയം നേടി ഹരിഹര്‍നഗറിന്‍റെ പാരമ്പര്യം കാത്തു. നാല്‍‌വര്‍ സംഘത്തിന്‍റെ തമാശകളും ഹൊററുമായിരുന്നു ഗോസ്റ്റ് ഹൌസിന്‍റെ പ്രത്യേകത. നെടുമുടി വേണുവിന്‍റെയും രാധികയുടെയും തകര്‍പ്പന്‍ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളായിരുന്നു ഈ സിനിമയുടെ ജീവന്‍. ഹരിഹര്‍ നഗര്‍ സീരീസിലെ ആദ്യ രണ്ടു സിനിമകളുടെ വിജയം ആവര്‍ത്തിക്കാനായില്ലെങ്കിലും ഗോസ്റ്റ് ഹൌസും ബോക്സോഫീസില്‍ കോടികളുടെ കിലുക്കമുണര്‍ത്തിയ ചിത്രമാണ്.

ഡോ. എസ് ജനാര്‍ദ്ദനന്‍ സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത സഹസ്രം ഗംഭീരവിജയമാണ് സ്വന്തമാക്കിയത്. സുരേഷ്ഗോപിയുടെ മികച്ച പ്രകടനവും മനോഹരമായ തിരക്കഥയുമായിരുന്നു ഈ സിനിമയുടെ വിജയം. ആദ്യ ദിവസം 98 ലക്ഷം രൂപ കളക്ഷന്‍ നേടിയ ഈ സിനിമ രണ്ടാഴ്ച കൊണ്ട് അഞ്ചുകോടി രൂപയാണ് വാരിക്കൂട്ടിയത്. കുറഞ്ഞ ദിവസങ്ങള്‍ക്കുള്ളില്‍ മുതല്‍മുടക്ക് തിരിച്ചുപിടിച്ച് ജൈത്രയാത്ര തുടരുകയാണ് സഹസ്രം.

മമ്മൂട്ടിയുടെ ബെസ്റ്റ് ആക്ടര്‍ സൂപ്പര്‍ഹിറ്റിലേക്ക് കുതിക്കുകയാണ്. കേരളമെങ്ങും 'മികച്ച സിനിമ'യെന്ന ഒരേ അഭിപ്രായമാണ് ബെസ്റ്റ് ആക്ടര്‍ സ്വന്തമാക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. ഗംഭീര ഇനിഷ്യല്‍ കളക്ഷന്‍ നേടിയ ഈ സിനിമ മൌത്ത് പബ്ലിസിറ്റിയിലൂടെ വന്‍ ഹിറ്റായി മാറുകയാണ്. മാര്‍ട്ടിന്‍ പ്രക്കാട്ട് എന്ന യുവ സംവിധായകന്‍ പ്രതീക്ഷയുണര്‍ത്തുന്നു.

Meghna Sundar, the actress how made her debut through Vinayan's 'Yakshiyum Njanum'is floored by Megastar Mammootty.

Meghna who recently shot with Mammootty for Shaji Kailas' film 'August 15' says that Mammootty is much more handsome in real life than on screen.

"I consider it extremely lucky to have got the opportunity to work with Mammukka. I was surprised when I met him at Trivandrum," says Meghna.

"He behaves with such love and care. If and when I reach his stature some day, I intend to follow his path of humility," gushes the actress who hails from Karnataka.

Pranchiyettan & The Saint:

After the delectable 'Kerala Cafe' in 2009, Ranjith gave us the incredibly charming 'Pranchiyettan and the Saint' this year, that emphasized that commercial cinema need not entirely be mindless drivel. One of the most intelligent films to have come out this year, 'Pranchiyettan and the Saint' won several viewer hearts and even completed a hundred day joy run at a few major centers!

Ranjith manages a unique mix of satire and comedy in 'Pranchiyettan and the Saint' and it was a tight ropewalk indeed for the director to juggle between fantasy and reality. In doing so he brought down heaven as close to earth and opened up a new universe before us where God and man beautifully blended into one.

Mammootty's 'Raavu Maayumbol'

G S Vijayan has titled his comeback movie with Megastar Mammootty as 'Raavu Maayumbol'. Scripted and produced by Renjith under the banner of his Capitol Theatre, the movie will feature Revathi in the female lead.

Renjith-Mammootty combo has been exceptional in recent times after the movie 'Kaiyoppu'. Their recent films like 'Palery Manickyam', 'Kerala Cafe' and 'Pranchiyettan and the Saint' were well received by critics and masses alike.

Few will also remember that it was Mammootty who had brought the young director in G S Vijayan through his debut movie 'Charithram' in the late eighties. Their after the duo hasn't come together for any other films.

Adoor back with Mammootty

It is celebration time of the big fans of Mammootty. World famous director Adoor Gopalakrishnan is now getting ready to team up with one of his favorite actors Mammootty, for a new film.

Planned to start by the August of 2011, the movie is expected to feature the star in another spectacular role. Remember the last two times when Mammootty played Adoor's protagonists in Mathilukal and Vidheyan, both ended up in fetching the actor the biggest awards for acting in the country.

And so Mammootty will be aiming the fourth award with this flick from the most renowned filmmaker from the state. Adoor who revealed his plans to a popular magazine, also talked about his admiration for Mammootty as an actor.

‘Kandahaar’ fails to take off

Mohanlal's much hyped thriller 'Kandahaar' which got into theatres last week is reported to be a bad earner at the box Office. The movie directed by Major Ravi which opened in around 90 centers in the state was reduced to 66 centers on the second day itself. The movie even failed to get the patronage of the big fans of Mohanlal.

'Kandahaar' largely settles on the story of the character played by Ganesh Venkatraman in the first half and is largely felt as a revamp of the Major's first big hit 'Keerthichakra'. The movie has a lot of dialogues in Hindi and this lack of Malayalam dialogues, which was also one of the reasons for failure of Major's 'Mission 90 days'.

വിനീത് ശ്രീനിവാസന്‍ സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത മലര്‍വാടി ആര്‍ട്സ് ക്ലബാണ് ഈ
വര്‍ഷത്തെ മറ്റൊരു പ്രധാന സിനിമ. ഒട്ടേറെ പുതുമുഖങ്ങളും പുതുമകളുമയി വന്ന

Vyshakh 's next with Mohanlal Mammootty latest film 'BestActor' which
was released a couple of weeks before, instantly captured the top slot
with encouraging opening week collections. The top five movies of the
weekend are:

1. 'Best Actor' - Mammootty's latest action comedy entertainer is an
interesting watch. This movie from the debutants Martin Prakattu with
a simple storyline, was well greeted at the box office. This small,
but hilarious movie is likely to bring in profits, if marketed well.

2. 'Kaarysthan' - 'Kaarystahan' has landed safely and will provide as
a big success to its makers. The film with Above average collections
moves on to the seventh week, but will find it harder to survive the
next week's big Malayalam releases.

3. Sahasram -The recent release for this sesson 'Sahasram' opened to
average initials. The movie registered around 30-40 percent
collections in the opening day. But with the good word of mouth, the

4. Thriller – Prithvi Rajs's cop flick fails to keep its going and
survives with lesser takers in major centers. In the metros and
cities, the movie is faring very well even though that cannot be said

5. Pranchiyetten – Mammootty's class film still maintains its audience
pulls at 100percent in major centers, where it is entering 100 days.

The other major release of this week 'Kandahar', starring Mohan lal
and AmithabBachan, has opened to massive collections.

KANDAHAR 2/5 nowrunning.com

There is one question that is bound to haunt every viewer who sits
through the two hours and odd minutes that make up Major Ravi's new
film 'Kandahar'. Hasn't the commercialization of patriotic sentiments
gone way over the top?

The film that has Major Mahadevan (Mohanlal) embarking on his third
mission, post Keerhtichakra and Kurukeshetra, starts off in 2006. An
Air India flight that takes off from Mumbai is hijacked by a bunch of
Afghan terrorists who demand the release of their leader spending his
days in an Indian jail. Major Mahadevan is called into action, and
along with his sprightly group of commandoes headed by Surya (Ganesh
Venkataraman), he gets about his job in no time.

Unfortunately the aforesaid commando operation takes up about thirty
minutes post-interval, and what happens during the rest of the film?
The entire first half is spent on explaining to us as to how Surya who
has had pilot training always dreams of flying a plane. There are not
straight ways to get a job these days, he says and hence spends his
time getting into street fights to serve justice to the poor. Major
Mahadevan who happens to see one of his duels takes him into the army.
Off he goes to the Dehradun Training Camp where he is seen frog
jumping and doing sit ups and push ups as punishment for disobedience.

It's obvious that for those who have been waiting keenly to see major
Mahadevan cracking the whip on the terrorists, this would be a royal
disappointment. And where does Amitabh Bachchan come into the picture?
As Surya's dad Loknath Sharma, who is an exemplary teacher based in
Ooty. He is married to a Malayali (the gorgeous Sumalatha who is
unpardonably wasted in an absolutely trivial role), and the
conversations between dad and son could drive anyone nuts. Surya
speaks in Malayalam, while his dad promptly retorts in Hindi with
Malayalam subtitles.

Even the logical loopholes in the script are unbelievable, and the
dialogues unmoving. Mahadevan who plans to meet Loknath Sharma, asks
Surya who's at the training camp, as to what he would like to hand
over to his dad. Believe it or not, a pack of tea comes the reply. And
that too a man who lives in Ooty.

Once the plane gets hijacked there are several shots of the event
being covered by the media, the most important ones of which are seen
on Asianet, with the 15th year logo flashing a 2010 in all glory
behind!

The action bit that has been a major highlight in all of Ravi's films
takes a back seat in 'Kandahar' where the focus is on a father-son
relationship. When the action does take place, there are very few
moments that are worth remembering. There are instances aplenty, when
you cross your eyes in disbelief at what's happening.

Because, 'Kandahar' is not a reenactment of the Indian Airlines Flight
814 hijack by the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen that took place in 1999. This
is a fictional account of an event that had shaken up the Indian
subcontinent. Hence Major Mahadevan sees to it that the commando
operation does not end up a diplomatic failure as has been accused by
the Indian negotiators in real. He plays the sharp shooter, the brain
man and even the pilot who crash lands the plane to safety.

Major Ravi's film on the other hand, is hijacked by an utterly
disastrous script that doesn't even let his flight take off. It's a
sloppy film that falls par way down our anticipations and that
monumentally wastes two of the best actors Indian cinema has ever
seen.

INDIA GLITZ ON BEST ACTOR

Best Actor - Martin Prakkat with a real good debut

Fashion photographer turned film director Martin Prakkat is off to a
very good start with the new flick 'Best Actor'. An intimate realistic
experience about an ordinary man who is ready to go to any extent to
realize his dreams, the movie really scores well with its fluid
narratives and balancing of emotions.

The movie has the megastar Mammootty as Mohan, a U P school teacher,
whose ultimate dream is to get into films. His wife Savithry and their
only son believes much in Mohan's qualifications for making it big and
don't mind him spending much of his time meeting directors and
pleading for roles.

Amidst his hardships, he faces a big humiliating experience in front
of his whole village and is forced to go for some real life
experience, by joining a goonda gang led by Lal. The movie goes on
to tell how the aspiring actor and human in him clashes all through
the events, that he faces to end up an inspiring morale.

The movie has a very nice, simple story which is told just like a
colorful fable. Though the narratives take time to make a safe
landing, thereafter it shows very innate sincerity. The use of Lal
Jose, Renjith and Blessy among others in the casting lends a bulk of
believability. And the freshness in presentations is evident from
the very different title cards to the climax and anti-climax that the
director experiments with appreciable success.

In the acting front, Mammooty is continuing with success stories in
selecting roles of élan and here too he gives his best as a character
with extreme dimensions, a man of humility in the former half and a
non conventional hero in the later. Lal, Nedumudi Venu, Salim Kumar
and Vinayakan, presented with the Kochy slang and the needed
exaggerations, pace up the plot. Shruthy Ramakrishan in her Malayalam
debut as Savithry also does a fine job.

The technical sides of the movie too are very good with neatly done
cinematography by Ajayan Vincent. The art direction by Joseph
Nellikkal, costumes by Sameera saneesh and Makeup by Pattanam Rasheed
are top class. The songs are also choreographed well. Among the songs
by Bijibal,'Swapnam oru chakara' is a chart topper.

All in all, Mammootty and Martin Prakkat definitely have a winner in
'Best Actor'. The movie which is almost sure to work well with the
family audiences and the fans is definitely a right start for a
promising director.

KANDAHAR BELOW AVG

After Keertichakra and Kurukshetra, Mohanlal and Major Ravi have come
out with another popular episode from the life and times of Major
Mahadevan in their latest much hyped Kandahar. The film is partly
inspired from the controversial Kandahar hijack that took India by
storm in 1999.

Scripted and directed by Army officer turned filmmaker Major Ravi,
Kandahar is mainly about the emotional conflicts in the minds of a few
characters. Of course there are moments when every Indian would feel
proud about being born in this great land, but the shaky script,
ordinary action sequences and a faulty climax lets the film down.

The entire first half is about the build up to the hijack with an
idealistic teacher named Lokanath Sharma (Amitabh Bachchan) supporting
his son Soorya (Ganesh Venkitaraman), to become a brave Army commando.
There is a parallel track happening where a Muslim woman (played by
KPAC Lalitha) painfully realizes that her only son has fallen into the
charm of some terrorist outfits.

Both the stories move on parallel lines as Soorya trains in the Indian
Military Academy at Dehradoon, while the other guy gets trained to
become a 'Jihadi terrorist' in Afghanistan!! The story takes some time
before the hijack happens, almost all on a sudden. A few terrorists
get into an Air India aircraft and forces the hapless pilots to fly
the plane with full of passengers on board, to Kandahar in
Afghanistan. They demand the release of three dreaded terrorists in
order to free those in the plane. Major Mahadevan and his team are now
designated to take on the terrorists.

The absence of a genuine script is evident as the main aspects in the
film gets too little time compared to the melodramatic events which
are there aplenty. The climax of the film is its biggest weakness and
sticks out like a sore thumb. The way Mohanlal and co enters the
hijacked aircraft and overcomes the well trained terrorists is done in
a very amateur manner. The visuals are generally fine, but the
highlight of the film perhaps could be the performances of the lead
actors.

Mohanlal is absolutely fantastic as the mild mannered Major Mahadevan.
The actor expresses in a subtle way, which is in fact a trademark
nature of his character as well. Amitabh Bachchan character speaks
only in Hindi and is obviously doing the film so that there will be
some combination shots with Mohanlal.

The scenes between the two are highly contrived. Still Bachchan shines
and shows why he is regarded as an evergreen icon. Ganesh Venketram
has the right looks, but his character doesn't connect well with the
viewers. Major Ravi's performance as a tough training officer is
impressive.

The rest of the cast including Sumalatha, Ragini Dwivedi and Ananya
among others have nothing much to perform in their limited roles. The
music by Shamir Tandon is pretty fine.

A note of advice for all of you who haven't watched Kandahar, it is
not a conventional action film. But the film has some sincere and
enduring moments, which can shake you up in a positive way. Watch it
for Mohanlal and Amitabh Bachchan, both of whom are known for their
acting prowess and you won't be disappointed.

MOHANLAL QUITS

മെഗാസ്റ്റാര്‍ മമ്മൂട്ടി നിര്‍മ്മിക്കുന്ന 'അരക്കള്ളന്‍ മുക്കാല്‍ക്കള്ളന്‍' എന്ന സിനിമയില്‍ നിന്ന് യൂണിവേഴ്സല്‍ സ്റ്റാര്‍ മോഹന്‍ലാല്‍ പിന്‍‌മാറിയതായി റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ട്. എന്താണ് ലാല്‍ പിന്‍‌മാറാനുണ്ടായ കാരണം എന്നത് വ്യക്തമല്ല. മോഹന്‍ലാല്‍ അഭിനയിക്കുന്ന കാര്യത്തില്‍ തീരുമാനമായിട്ടില്ല എന്ന് ഈ ചിത്രത്തിന്‍റെ സംവിധായകരായ ഉദയ്കൃഷ്ണ - സിബി കെ തോമസ് ടീം പറയുന്നു.

മമ്മൂട്ടി നിര്‍മ്മിക്കുന്ന ഈ സിനിമ 2011 ഓണത്തിനാണ് പ്രദര്‍ശനത്തിനെത്തുന്നത്. മമ്മൂട്ടി, മോഹന്‍ലാല്‍, ദിലീപ് എന്നിവര്‍ പ്രധാന കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളെ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുമെന്നായിരുന്നു നേരത്തേ ലഭിച്ചിരുന്ന റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ടുകള്‍. എന്നാല്‍ ഏറ്റവും പുതിയ വിവരം അനുസരിച്ച് ഈ സിനിമയില്‍ മോഹന്‍ലാല്‍ അഭിനയിക്കുന്നില്ല. മമ്മൂട്ടിയും ദിലീപുമാണ് ചിത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന താരങ്ങള്‍. ദിലീപ് അരക്കള്ളനായും മമ്മൂട്ടി മുക്കാല്‍ക്കള്ളനായും അഭിനയിക്കുന്നു.

മമ്മൂട്ടിയെയും ദിലീപിനെയും കൂടാതെ മലയാളത്തിലെ വന്‍ താരനിര അഭിനയിക്കും. രണ്ട് നായികമാര്‍ ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കും. ഈ സിനിമയുടെ വണ്‍ലൈന്‍ പൂര്‍ത്തിയായതായാണ് റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ടുകള്‍. വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്കുമുമ്പേ ഉദയനും സിബിയും ഒരു സിനിമ സംവിധാനം ചെയ്യാന്‍ ഒരുങ്ങിയതാണ്. എന്നാല്‍ തിരക്കഥാകൃത്തുക്കള്‍ എന്ന നിലയിലുള്ള തിരക്കുകള്‍ മൂലം നടന്നില്ല. ഇപ്പോള്‍ മമ്മൂട്ടി തന്നെ മുന്‍‌കൈയെടുത്ത് ഇരുവരെയും സംവിധായകരാക്കുകയാണ്.

Mammootty to dub in his voice for Shikari

Malayalam actor Mammootty has finally completed the shooting for his first Kannada movie Shikari, which is also being made in Malayalam. Now, he is gearing up to do the dubbing works of the film. The specialty of the film is that Mammooka will dub in his own voice in both the versions of the film.

Shikari revolves around the experiences of a software engineer and Mammotty has played two roles in the film. National award winning director Abhay Simha says that Mammooka has given life to both the characters in it. According to him, he will dub in his own voice for both the roles in both the versions of the film.

The film Shikari has been shot in Bengaluru, Mysore and at a village in Theerthahalli Taluk. Its post production works have already been started and the dubbing work will start in a few days. Poonam Bajwa, Audithya, Mohan, Neenasam Aswath, Achyutha, Sihi Kahi Chandru and Suresh Krishna are in cast.

BEST ACTOR COLLECTION

Mammootty's 'Best Actor' has become the final hit of the year, to sign
of 2010 in flair. The movie which opened in 82 centres last week , was
seeded best by the audience than the movies that were on fight with
it. Already grabbing 1.25crore in five days, the movie is sure to rake
in profits in three weeks run. The success point of the movie seems to
be its fast narratives and the difference of the character that the
megastar portrayed.

According the Big Screen Films, the producers of Mammootty film, 'Best
Actor' has grossed near10 lakhs in five days by Anjali from capital
city of kerala.

The film may go well with the family and youth audiences as it offers
much for them. The normal budget film with a good star cast and
different songs is expected to do well, if supported with good
marketing.

Best Actor is more than reason for celebration for fans of Mammootty. For the rest of us who would like to have a bit more than star charisma from his films, Martin Prakkatt has plenty to offer as well. In his directorial debut Martin tells a simple story in a surprisingly imposing manner that does make us sit up and take note of his promising entry into films.

Mammootty plays Mohan, a school teacher who dreams of being an actor some day. What makes Mohan different is that he isn't the kind who sits dreaming home; rather he leaves no stone unturned to make his dream come true. Prompted by a bunch of young film makers, Mohan decides to transform himself for a toughie role and joins a group of local thugs (Lal, Nedumudi, Salim Kumar & Vinayakan) under the guise of a Mumbai goon.

Determination and talent together could be the combo that leads you straight to your target. Director Ranjith who appears in a cameo, assures Mohan that is he is determined to become an actor, no force on earth would be able to put a stop on his aspirations. An actor, he will be, no matter what.

Martin Prakkatt's film comes up with a delightful blend of comedy and emotions and takes off quite peacefully, at a leisurely pace. Mohan moves about begging for a role and in the process meets up Lal Jose (another cameo) and super director Srikumar (Sreenivasan). He then gangs up with the foursome at Fort Kochi and the film zooms ahead with a remarkable pace.

The tiny blemishes in the script that appear here and there are very quickly compensated by the technique on show. The story and the situations that its characters go through are routine. Yet its tackled with gusto and the end product is quite appealing. The climactic surprise that awaits the viewer might not exactly be brand new either. Nevertheless, the finale is as apt as it could get.

Here is another film that has been elevated to an altogether different level by the cinematographer at its helm. Ajayan Vincent is the man of the day, yet again, and his camera pans across the rugged landscape of an urban Kochi as adroitly as it does across the lush green countryside. The frames that he captures in the process are simply spectacular! Add to it some foot tapping music by Bijibal that includes numbers as 'Swapnam Oru Chaaku' and 'Machua Eri' and you have a real commercial potboiler in your hands.

Perhaps there isn't a need anymore for Mammootty to prove what an incredible performer he is, and yet Best Actor affirms the amazing stuff that its lead actor is made of. In an amazingly deft scene, Mohan walks away from a film location, having been rejected by the director, with his head partially bent in dejection and gloom. Though there are several other instances to be cited, the above mentioned is one of the most outstanding ones that remain right at the fore front.

Best Actor puts its director along with its actor in the spotlight. The film is no classic; but it's a sweet little film that tells an endearing tale that turns out to be quite easily relatable.

BEST ACTOR REVIEW

As the title suggests, it is about a man who wants to make it big in the film world and his struggles.
Despite having a known story, the director , the actors and almost everyone did their best to make it the best movie, and it was indeed reflected on the screen.

First Half:
A small introduction of the hero, his routines, ambitions, struggles , disappointments etc form the main part.
Apart from the lead actor, no one else had anything much to do....
A good , but expected first half.

Highlights: Mammootty's senti scenes, Swapnamoru chaakku song, camera, direction, bgm and the last 15 min before interval.

Second Half:
The director never forgetted about the fans of the actor and most scenes had the actor rocking in style.
Unlike the first half, the actor had good supporting cast to turn the proceedings into a more racy, entertaining and rocking one.
Towards the end , the actor showed his brilliance in transferring his emotions into the audience too.
The second half was too good....

Highlights: Mammootty the actor, Mammootty the star, Salim kumar, Nedumudi Venu, Lal.

Overall, the film justifies its title and promos making the film a true entertainer with a good script and story.

ഞാന്‍ സത്യത്തില്‍ 'ഡാഡി കൂള്‍' പോലൊരു സിനിമ എന്നു പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ചാണ് ബെസ്റ്റ് ആക്ടര്‍ കാണാന്‍ പോയത്. 'സ്വപ്നമൊരു ചാക്ക്' എന്ന ഗാനരംഗം ടിവിയില്‍ കണ്ടപ്പോള്‍ ഉണ്ടായത് അത്തരമൊരു ഇം‌പ്രഷനാണ്. എന്നാല്‍ കുടുംബത്തേക്കാള്‍, സിനിമയെ സ്നേഹിക്കുന്ന മോഹന്‍ മാഷിനെ കണ്ടപ്പോള്‍ മനസിലായി ഇതില്‍ പുതുമയുള്ള ചിലതുണ്ട്. ഇതുവരെ നമ്മള്‍ കണ്ടിട്ടില്ലാത്ത ചിലത്.

സിനിമാനടനാകാനുള്ള മോഹന്‍ എന്ന സ്കൂള്‍ അധ്യാപകന്‍റെ അലച്ചിലും കഷ്ടപ്പാടുമാണ് സിനിമയുടെ ആദ്യപകുതി. വേദനാജനകമായ പല അനുഭവങ്ങളും അയാള്‍ക്ക് ഉണ്ടാകുന്നു. പല സംവിധായകരും(ശ്രീനിവാസന്‍ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ശ്രീകുമാര്‍ എന്ന കഥാപാത്രം ഉള്‍പ്പടെ) മോഹന്‍ മാഷെ അവഹേളിക്കുന്നു. സിനിമാഭ്രാന്തനായി കാലം കഴിക്കുന്ന അയാള്‍ നമ്മുടെ നാട്ടിലൊക്കെ സാധാരണ കാണുന്ന ഒരു
കഥാപാത്രം തന്നെ. പക്ഷേ ഇത് വട്ട് അല്‍പ്പം കൂടുതലാണ്. സിനിമാ നടനാകാനായി, അനുഭവങ്ങള്‍ കിട്ടാനായി അയാള്‍ സ്വയം മറ്റൊരു നാട്ടിലേക്ക് പറിച്ചുനടുകയാണ്.

ഡെന്‍‌വര്‍ ആശാനും സംഘവും(നെടുമുടി വേണു, ലാല്‍, സലിം കുമാര്‍, വിനായകന്‍...) വിരാജിക്കുന്ന നാട്ടില്‍ അവര്‍ക്കൊപ്പമാണ് മോഹന്‍റെ വാസം. പിന്നീടുണ്ടാകുന്ന പ്രശ്നങ്ങള്‍. സിനിമയുടെ മായിക ലോകത്തേക്ക് മോഹന്‍ മാഷ് എന്ന സാധാരണക്കാരന്‍ എങ്ങനെ നടന്നടുക്കുന്നു എന്നതാണ് ബെസ്റ്റ് ആക്ടറിന്‍റെ ഹൈലൈറ്റ്. ഇന്‍റര്‍വെല്‍ മുതല്‍ ക്ലൈമാക്സിനു മുമ്പുള്ള 10 മിനിറ്റു വരെ ആവേശം ഒരു
നദിപോലെ ഒഴുകിയെങ്കില്‍ ക്ലൈമാക്സ് ഇളകിമറിയുന്ന ഒരു കടലാണ്. ക്ലൈമാക്സ് രംഗങ്ങള്‍ ഇത്രയും ത്രില്ലിംഗായ മറ്റൊരു സിനിമ എന്‍റെ ഓര്‍മ്മയില്‍ 'ഉദയനാണ് താരം' ആണ്.

തന്‍റെ അഭിനയജീവിതത്തില്‍ 'രാജമാണിക്യം' ഒരു വഴിമാറി നടത്തമായിരുന്നെങ്കില്‍ മമ്മൂട്ടി ബെസ്റ്റ് ആക്ടറിലൂടെ ഒരു പുതുവഴി തേടുകയാണ്. ഒരു തകര്‍പ്പന്‍ സിനിമയാണ് മാര്‍ട്ടിന്‍ പ്രക്കാട്ടും മമ്മൂട്ടിയും ചേര്‍ന്ന് സമ്മാനിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. അപ്രതീക്ഷിതമായ ട്വിസ്റ്റുകള്‍ പ്രേക്ഷകരെ അമ്പരപ്പിക്കുകയും ആവേശം കൊള്ളിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്ന കാഴ്ചയാണ് തിയേറ്ററില്‍
കാണാനായത്. സംവിധായകന്‍ ലാല്‍ ജോസിന്‍റെ വീട്ടിലെത്തിയ മോഹന്‍ മാഷോട് "ആരാ..." എന്ന് കുളപ്പുള്ളീ ലീല അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്ന കഥാപാത്രം ചോദിക്കുന്നു. "മോഹന്‍" എന്ന് മറുപടി. "ദേ..മോഹന്‍ലാല്‍ കാണാന്‍ വന്നിരിക്കുന്നു" എന്നാണ് ലീല വീടിനുള്ളിലേക്കുനോക്കി വിളിച്ചുപറയുന്നത്. തിയേറ്റര്‍ ഇളകിമറിഞ്ഞു അക്ഷരാര്‍ത്ഥത്തില്‍.

മമ്മൂട്ടിയുടെ തികച്ചും വ്യത്യസ്തമായ ഒരു കഥാപാത്രമാണ് മോഹന്‍. ഉജ്ജ്വലമായാണ് അദ്ദേഹം അതിന് ജീവന്‍ നല്‍കിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. മമ്മൂട്ടിയുടെ ഭാര്യ സാവിത്രിയായി അഭിനയിക്കുന്നത് കന്നഡ താരം ശ്രുതി രാമകൃഷ്ണനാണ്. അധികം പെര്‍ഫോം ചെയ്യാന്‍ ഇല്ലെങ്കിലും ശ്രുതി കിട്ടിയ വേഷം നന്നാക്കി. നെടുമുടി വേണുവിന് 'എല്‍‌സമ്മ'യ്ക്ക് ശേഷം കിട്ടുന്ന നല്ല കഥാപാത്രമാണ് ഡെന്‍‌വര്‍
ആശാന്‍. വേണു അത് പൊലിപ്പിച്ചു എന്ന് പറയേണ്ടതില്ലല്ലോ. സുരാജ് വെഞ്ഞാറമ്മൂടിന്‍റെ ഈ കാലത്ത് മങ്ങിപ്പോയ സലിം കുമാറിന്‍റെ അതിഗംഭീര തിരിച്ചുവരവ് കൂടിയാണ് ബെസ്റ്റ് ആക്ടര്‍. സലിം നിറഞ്ഞാടിയിരിക്കുകയാണ്. ബിജുക്കുട്ടനും തനിക്കു ലഭിച്ച കഥാപാത്രത്തെ ഗംഭീരമാക്കി. എടുത്തുപറയേണ്ട മറ്റു പല പ്രകടനങ്ങളുമുണ്ട്. ക്ലൈമാക്സിന്‍റെ രഹസ്യം പൊളിയുമെന്നതിനാല്‍ അത്
പരാമര്‍ശിക്കുന്നില്ല.

RANJITH AND MAMMOOTTY JOINS AGAIN

പ്രാഞ്ചിയേട്ടന്‍ ആന്‍റ് ദി സെയിന്‍റ് എന്ന സൂപ്പര്‍ഹിറ്റിനു ശേഷം
മെഗാസ്റ്റാര്‍ മമ്മൂട്ടിയും ഹിറ്റ്മേക്കര്‍ രഞ്ജിത്തും വീണ്ടും

Mammootty will be celebrating the hundred days of his new movie
'Pranchiyetten and The Saint' in a couple of weeks. The movie which
has become the biggest family hit in the recent times now shows
possibilities of ending up as the Superhit of the year after 'Pokkiri
Raja'.

The movie which continues in more than five centers in its 90th day,
is still registering good collections. In the metros, the movie is
rock stable in its collections.And if the collections continue as
such; this will be one of the rarest movies that will celebrate a full
show hundred days in Ernakulam-one of the biggest metros of the state
where there is scarcity in number of release theatres.

Mammootty among three conferred D.Litt by Calicut University

The Kerala Governor Mr R.S. Gavai, who is Chancellor of the Calicut
University, on Thursday conferred honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Litt)
degree on three prominent personalities including actor Mammootty at a
function here.
Mammootty received the degree in person while the nominees of Freedom
fighter Captain Lakshmi Sahgal and historian Irfan Habib, received the
degree from Gavai, at a special convocation held at the university
campus at Tenhipalam, in Malappuram district.
Captain Lakshmi Sehgal was very active in the independence movement of
India and commanded the 'Rani of Jhansi Regiment of INA, formed by
Subhash Chandra Bose. A doctor by profession, she is still active as a
medical practitioner and a social worker. She was awarded Padma
Vibhushan in 1998.
Prof Irfan Habib, a historian of international repute, was born on
August 12, 1931 in Gujarat. He is presently Professor Emeritus at
Aligarh Muslim University. He has served as Chairman of the Indian
Council of Historical Research, President of the Indian History
Congress and Fellow of British Royal History Society.
Acclaimed as one of the greatest living historians of India today, his
interpretations of history from a Marxist perspective have received
internatonal recognition. He was awarded Padma Bhushan in 2005.
Mohammed Kutty, better known as Mammootty, was born on September 7,
1953 at Vaikom in Kottayam district of Kerala. A prominent actor of
the Malayalam film industry, he has won three National Film Awards
besides several state awards. With over 300 films to his credit in
Malayalam and other languages, Mammootty continues to be a leading
artist of Indian Cinema. He was awarded Padma Shri in 1998.
