Mammootty busy with big projects in 2009

Kochi Jan 30 (IANS) Malayalam superstar Mammootty, who gave hits like "Roudram", "Annan Thampi" and "Twenty 20" last year, says 2009 has begun on a high note with his latest release "Love in Singapore" performing well at the box office and prestigious projects in his kitty.

"Two films - 'Pazhazzi Raja' and 'Kuttishrank' - have been completed and are slated for release. I expect a lot from them. There are a few more projects in the pipeline and therefore my hands are full this year as well," Mammootty, who has completed 26 years in the Malayalam film industry, told IANS.

Another of his films is "Patanthil Bhootham" and he teams up with Kavya Madhavan in it.

Other major projects to hit the screens this year include a film on social reformer Sree Narayana Guru, in which will Mammootty along with Mohanlal.

Then he has "Daddy Cool", being directed by a newcomer.

Mammootty, meanwhile, brushed aside speculations about him contesting the ensuing Lok Sabha elections on a Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) ticket.

"Who told you all this? How can anyone say something without my consent? Right now I have a good job and I am happy with that," said Mammootty who incidentally has been the chairman of the CPI-M backed Kairali TV since its inception in the mid 1990s.

Mammootty is a 'Loud Speaker'

The titles of recent Mammootty starrers have mostly been the best adjectives for the highlighted quality of the protagonist. Moving on in this track after the movies like 'Mayavi', 'Thaskaraveran', 'Parunthu' and 'Annan Thampi' is his newer projects like 'Handsome', 'Pokkiriraaja' and 'Daddycool'.

And so is the title of the latest Mammootty movie with Jayaraj. This new project is now titled as 'Loud Speaker', following the traits of the lead man who always prefers to talk aloud.

Mammootty will play the character named "Mike Gopalan" in this movie, which will be penned by Renjith. 'Loud Speaker' will be one of the important projects of the superstar, this year.

Movie Review: Love In Singapore - Laughter In Theatres

Love In Singapore is the first release of Mammootty in 2009. Scripted, produced and directed by Rafi-Mecartin, the movie also features Jayasurya, Navneet Kaur, Salim Kumar, Nedumudi Venu, Bijukuttan, Suraj Venjarumoodu in prominent roles.
Synopsis
Machu (Mammootty) is a person who began his life as a rag picker. He has grown and has become a rich and successful scrap dealer. He happens to meet Perera (Nedumudi Venu) who swindles Machu of some amount. Machu falls in love with Perera¢s daughter Diana (Navneet Kaur). But Perera escapes with his daughter to Singapore. Machu follows and what happens in Singapore forms the rest of the story.
Analysis
One never walks into a Rafi-Mecartin movie expecting a good story. Like all Rafi-Mecartin movies, Love In Singapore is a comedy fare with a bunch of LOL moments. The entire plot is weak but it is the comedy elements which makes the movie work. The first half is average with some good comedy but in places you find that in places the intended comedy falls flat. There are some ridiculously funny but brilliant sequences like the one in which Kerala is introduced. Salim Kumar and Bijukuttan are not upto their usual form. But still, the first half is engaging enough.
The second half is the movie¢s strength. The comedy generated by Suraj and Mammootty is really funny. It is the second half of the movie which really turns things around. Leaving no room for unwanted sentiments, the second half is packed with loads of comedy and action. Rafi-Mecartin are not known for brilliant climaxes, but in this movie, the climax is passable with some tiny suspense elements. The movie is a fast paced comedy which is enjoyable mostly.
Performance Of The Cast
Mammootty excels in the role of Akri Machu, the scrap dealer. He looks handsome even at this age which is really commendable. Mammootty¢s ramp walk song is a must watch for style analysts. His performance in all departments be it stunts or comedy is excellent. Some noteworthy LOL moments are the scene at the end of the movie where Machu (who is illiterate) is introduced to English speaking board members of a company. Jayasurya is cool in the cameo role he plays.
Navneet Kaur has very little to do in this movie. But she does make a pretty sight. Once again we are seeing Suraj Venjarumoodu overshadowing all others in the comic department. Salim Kumar and Bijukuttan seem rusty. Nedumudi Venu is good as the Perera saayip who swindles Machu.
Technical Analysis
Direction by Rafi Mecartin is very good. The director duo seem to be in full control of the movie. Scripting is also good because the movie never wanders off path too much. Cinematography by Sanjeev Shankar is excellent. The beautiful locales of Singapore are captured very well. Special mention for the art director for creating good colorful sets especially the one where the ramp walk song was shot.
Action director needs special mention for creating some good sequence of action without too much unrealistic effects. Costumes and make up are spot on. Mammootty¢s costumes are really good. Music by Suresh Peeters is average. The movie has been made with very good production values. The VFX works are very good.
Verdict
A typical Rafi Mecartin movie held together by Mammootty and Suraj. Watch out for Mammootty and Suraj Venjarumoodu¢ s performances. In the end, Rafi Mecartin and Mammootty¢s Love in Singapore is an enjoyable laugh fest with good doses comedy and action. Go in there with a mind to laugh and you won¢t be disappointed.
Rating: 7/10

‘Yugapurushan' to start this 21

The movie which will feature superstars Mammootty and Mohanlal together after their immensely successful 20:20, will start canning at Ottappalam with Tamil actor 'Thalaivaasal Vijay' in the title character.

The makers have finalized upon the actor to do the role of Guru, after considering many faces including that of Mammootty who humbly requested the producers to find some lesser known person to do the role, just because of the familiarity of the face of the guru.

Mammootty in lead role of Ranjit's new movie

Malayalam superstar Mammootty will be in the lead role in director Ranjit's yet to be titled film based on T P Rajeevan's Malaylam novel 'Paleri Manikyam - Oru Pathira Kolapathakathinte Katha.' The versatile actor will essay the role of an investigator in the film that narrates the trials and tribulations of a woman who was murdered after sexual assault, perhaps first such incident after formation of Kerala State in 1947, Ranjit told reporters .
Rest of the cast in the film, to be produced by Capitol Theatre, would be selected from among theatre artists hailing from the district and surrounding areas, he said.

Explaining why importance was given to local artists, he said the cast from the locality, familiar with local dialect, could give a genuine touch to the character they protrayed.

''It's a new exeperience aimed at tapping talents from the theatre arena,'' said Ranjit, also a script writer and actor, who gave many box office hits such as ''Madambi,'' ''Bharatchandran, IPS,'' ''Devasuram,'' and ''Aaran Thampuran,'' among others.

However, he said, professional actors, apart from Mammootty, would be considered if suitable local theatre persons were not available to fit into different roles.

Capitol is planning a two-week training camp for selected artists, he said.

Mammootty a Lok Sabha candidate?

The only megastar of Malayalam, the longtime well wisher of LDF in the state and the chairman of Kairali-the Party controlled television channel, Mammootty, may field himself as a candidate in the coming Lok Sabha elections.

The proletarian party is known to have some plans to use the charisma and fan following of the star to their benefit by presenting him as a candidate in a crucial constituency. Mammootty is now considered as an able name to contest from constituencies like Ernakulam, Manjeri or Malappuram.

When the similar rumors came up a few months ago Mammootty has then denied the chances of being in the contest, through his Public Relations Officer.

The PRO of the star then made it clear that Mammootty, instead of becoming a leader of a limited number of public, always liked to remain a hero of the entire masses of the state.

Anyhow, Mammootty may now feel great pressure from the party who desperately need the stature of such a big star to make benefits in the crucial coming elections.

The theatres which were charted for Red Chillies will be now offered the Mamootty flick which carry good preview reports. As per the latest reports 'Love in Singapore' will make a wide release, gracing at least a hundred centers all across the st

India Today expert view on Left to field Mammootty in Kerala?

Even Left parties don't seem to be immune to the dazzle of celluloid any longer. Kerala's ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) appears set to field south Indian cinema's superstar Mammootty in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Though formal talks are yet to begin, LDF leaders said the move will have wide acceptability among all LDF partners. "We have always supported artistes and cultural activists. And Mammootty is known to be a Left sympathiser. What is wrong if we consider his name," a senior Left leader said on condition of anonymity.
In a career spanning more than a quarter of a century, Mammootty has acted in more than 300 movies - mostly Malayalam but some also in other languages, including Hindi. He has thrice won the national award and has also been honoured with the Padmashree.
He could be fielded from either Ernakulam, where he is based, or the Ponnani or Mancheri seats.
Minister of state for external affairs and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader E. Ahamed currently represents Ponnani. The seat has returned only IUML candidates since 1977. But LDF believes Mammootty's presence can create troubles for the IUML here.
In Mancheri, another IUML stronghold, Mammootty had worked as an advocate briefly. If the actor is fielded from here, sitting MP and CPM leader T.. K. Hamsa could be shifted to Ponnani, as he is quite popular in the Muslim- dominated Malappuram district.
Though he was not available for comments, Mammootty has hinted at a possible jump into politics in recent interviews as well as on a blogsite he launched on New Year Day. In his first post, titled Politics of Economy, he wrote no one should take the global economic meltdown lightly.
"An economy that can meet the crisis must be envisaged. We need new economic habits and intelligent investments, " he said. Many respondents also asked him to be more active" in politics.
Mammootty also dwelt at length about his concern for the "socio- political situation" in three interviews he gave on January 1 to major Malayalam channels.
He made similar speeches during his unscheduled visit to the State School Youth Festival on December 31.
Last year, he had addressed the national conference of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), the youth wing of CPM. He told the meet the Gujarat riots of 2002 would not have taken place had organisations like the DYFI been active there.
Mammootty is also the chairman of the CPM- funded Kairali television channel. But his presence at the release of the Malayalam translation of BJP leader L. K. Advani's autobiography late last year raised a lot of Leftist eyebrows in the state.
His massive popularity as a filmstar, however, does not guarantee political success.
Kerala stands out among south Indian states for not taking kindly to the ilk of actorsturned- politicians. Popular film and stage actor Murali contested the 1998 general elections from Alappuzha on a CPM ticket, but lost to veteran Congress leader V. M. Sudheeran by a huge margin. Iconic Malayalam star Prem Naseer also tried his luck in politics, but could not make an impact.

The year which opened with dud's like ''Of the people'' and ''novel '' had to wait till the vishu season to deliver its first big hits in Sathyan Anthikkad;s ''Innathe chinthavishayam'' and Anwar Rasheed's ''Annan Thampi 'i..But the biggest hit of the year was undoubtedly AMMA's ''Twenty:20'' which is raking in collections in millions, breaking every box office records. The film released in 110 theatres featruing 72 big stars from the industry , got an extended run even to this Christmas season where no super star films was in the fray.

Closely following the hit list in position two is Mammootty''s'' Annan thampi'' which had surprising initials in 2008.The movie opened the wide theatre release patterns in the state ,harvesting the best of collections .The movie turned a profit in its three weeks run and collected many folds of the capital . The movie that made the biggest run, in terms of days is Jayaram;s comeback movie ''Veruthe Oru bharya'' which is still in theatres even after 125 days. The movie is one of the biggest super hits of the year.

Super star Mohanlal's only hit was madampi.....

The other notable hits of the year includes Johny Antony;s ''cycle '' which came out in the very first month of 2008.The movie was a surprise hit which also introduced popular singer Vineeth Sreenivasn to the acting front.

Dileep had a welcome hit in the last part of the year in '"Crazy Gopalan'' which has opened up well and in all chances ,will end up as a safer hit.

Shafi's Lollipop'' opened badly but picked up after an initial couple of days. The movie whose highlights are its big star cast will also end up as a profit maker .

Mamootty's ''Roudram'' had some great initial collections which helped the movie to be on the safer side ,though without a long run.The only small films in the hit list is Shaji-Shaiju's ''Shakesphere MA malayalam'' which collected enough in its 60 day run to end up as a hit.

The other four films that managed to become average earners include Renjith's ''Thirakkatha'' , which was on the only big movie for the last onam..Mohanlal's Kurukshetra '' was one another film that opened with great initials but couldn't survive with the collections for long.''Kurukshetra'''s huge budjet also made it a losser in the end. Rajesh -faizal's ''Malabar wedding' and Sudheer-manu's ''Kabadi-kabadi '' also made the distributor safe with average collections.

The star of 2008 is mammootty........[all 6 films of mammootty made the producer safe..]

The graph of 2008 is much better than that of 2007 as it could convert at least twenty percent of the total released movies, to the safer side.
