Malayalam superstar Mammootty will be in the lead role in director Ranjit's yet to be titled film based on T P Rajeevan's Malaylam novel 'Paleri Manikyam - Oru Pathira Kolapathakathinte Katha.' The versatile actor will essay the role of an investigator in the film that narrates the trials and tribulations of a woman who was murdered after sexual assault, perhaps first such incident after formation of Kerala State in 1947, Ranjit told reporters .
Rest of the cast in the film, to be produced by Capitol Theatre, would be selected from among theatre artists hailing from the district and surrounding areas, he said.

Explaining why importance was given to local artists, he said the cast from the locality, familiar with local dialect, could give a genuine touch to the character they protrayed.

''It's a new exeperience aimed at tapping talents from the theatre arena,'' said Ranjit, also a script writer and actor, who gave many box office hits such as ''Madambi,'' ''Bharatchandran, IPS,'' ''Devasuram,'' and ''Aaran Thampuran,'' among others.

However, he said, professional actors, apart from Mammootty, would be considered if suitable local theatre persons were not available to fit into different roles.

Capitol is planning a two-week training camp for selected artists, he said.
