3 Mammootty movies rocking at Ernakulam...

Three-fold success for Malayalam cinema

A rare phenomenon is taking place in Malayalam cinema today. All the three festival releases — Shikar, Pranchiyettan & the Saint and Elsamma Enna Aankutty — are doing excellent business. Such a thing has not happened in Malayalam cinema in recent memory."I cannot recall another instance of so many films doing well at the same time; it is indeed a much-needed boost for the Malayalam film industry," says M. Padmakumar, director of Shikar, the biggest hit of the three. "The fact that people are thronging theatres to watch all the three films is extremely encouraging for directors like me."
The biggest surprise of the three films though is the steady improvement at the box office of Pranchiyettan & the Saint, directed by Ranjith. The brilliantly-penned satire has indeed been the Malayalam film of the year, but there were doubts if it would get viewers from all classes.
"It is heartening to see that the film has been accepted by all kinds of film-goers, not just those who look at films in a more serious way," says Ranjith. "When I decided to make the film, I was not bothered about its fate at the box office at all. The film was made at a relatively low budget and it has already made profit," he says.
Pranchiyettan & the Saint has already collected almost Rs.4 crore, though the film was released only in 60 centres. Shikar, which is playing in over 100 theatres, has made over Rs.8 crore. Elsamma Enna Aankutty has pocketed more than Rs.4 crore.
The beginning of the year had seen two big hits —Pokkiri Raja and In Ghost House Inn. Mummy & Me and Katha Thudarunnu had also done good business, making 2010 the best year for Malayalam cinema in a long, long time.Says producer of Elsamma Enna Aaankutty, M. Ranjith: "I have never seen such a good year for Malayalam cinema. Things are definitely looking up."

'Pranchiyettan...' lands in safer zones

Ranjith's new movie 'Pranchiyettan and the Saint', is turning out to be a safe hit for its distributors 'Playhouse' owned by its leading star Mammootty. The movie which was reported to take an opening week gross of 1.42 crores has repeated the feat also in the second week, making a total collection of around three crores.
The movie has now amassed around Rs 1.60 Crore as distributors share from its 60 odd releasing centers. 'Pranchiyettan', which was shot in 31 days, is a low budget flick. The movie which is going particularly strong in Thrissur, Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram, is quite popular among the families.
The interesting trivia of the movie is that Ranjith was forced to go to Goa to shoot the church sequences of the film, as no church authorities in Kerala were willing to allow the shoot of the movie on its premises. Their search ended in an old Church in Goa where the art director made a beautiful statue of St Francis, which was gifted to the same church after the shoot.

Puluvan Mathayi:Saji Surendran with Mammootty...

One of the most promising young directors of Mollywood, Saji Surendran had long been known as a Jayasury specialist. His first three films like 'Ivar Vivahithrayal'and, 'HappyHusabnd',are Superhits. The last of the trio 'Four Friends' which ready for the release on next month. But now it seems that Saji Surendran is planning to open a new career line, planning back to back films with super stars. The young director, an associate to talanted directors , has already started plan for his first film with a Megastar - Mammootty titled "Puluvan Mathayi". Saji surendarn is more than thrilled to present Mammookka in a role with humour shades, much different from the ones the star is up to, these days.Krishna Poojapura will write the scripts for this film which will be produced by Thommichan Mulagu paadam. The movie according to initial discussions will be an comedy entertainer.

Saji surendarn is expecting the film to do wonders in his careers, but it now seems that even before he completes the movie, his career seems to be on promising lines. The director has been offered two more projects, one with prithvi raj and other with superstar Mohanlal. .

Mammootty's natural acting behind 'Pranchiyettan' success: Ranjith

Ranjith, who is basking in the unexpected success of his 'Pranchiyettan and the saint', says that it was the natural acting of Mammootty that made the film acceptable to all sections of film viewers
In two weeks, the film has already garnered a distributor's share of Rs 1.60 crore. He says that people may have liked the humorous way in which he narrated a serious subject.
Ranjith says he has been flooded with calls from ordinary people, who want to congratulate him on his cinema. "They say, give us at least one such film every year'. When I hear this, the happiness I feel cannot be described in words," says Ranjith.
What makes him happy about the way the people have received the film is this: "The hero is no great hero; no action, fights and all. The film has a hero who conquers the minds of the people with his natural emoting."
Ranjith's next also will star Mammootty in the lead. GS Vijayan will direct the movie.

Mammootty’s Pranchiyettan is a sleeper hit!

The Renjith directed Pranchiyettan and the Saint, is turning out to be a sleeper hit.

The film is reported to have taken a distributors share of around Rs 1.60 Crore in two weeks from 60 odd releasing centres. It is very strong in Thrissur, Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram.

In a recent interview, Renjith has clarified that he was forced to go to Goa to shoot the climax of the film, as no church in Kerala was willing to allow shooting on its premises.

Says Renjith: " I wanted to shoot the entire film in Thrissur itself, but Church authorities refused to provide me with the necessary permission. Mammootty was very keen that I should not compromise and that is how our search began for a beautiful church outside Kerala which was found in old Goa."

Renjith's art director made the statue of St Francis and cameraman Venu picturised the scenes so convincingly. After completing the film Renjith donated the statue to the church as a gift.

Arjun is quite excited with the response of Vandematharam...

Vandae Maatharam, released without much hype, but actor Arjun is quite excited with the response he's been getting for the film. The film, also starring Mammooty and Sneha and directed by Aravind D, hit screens last Friday. "I won't say Vandae Maatharam has an unusual storyline," begins Arjun, who plays a police officer in the film, "It's actually a subject that's been commonly made into films. It's about terrorists infiltrating the country. But, the subject has been treated in an unusual way." The movie, a bilingual, was earlier titled Aruvadai in Tamil. "Well, it has nothing to do with farmers though there are a few scenes where we talk about nationalising the rivers," Arjun clarifies and adds, "Also, we wanted to release the film simultaneously in Tamil and Malayalam as Vandae Maatharam." Arjun says there were several reasons for the film's delay in hitting the screens. "It was difficult to coordinate the dates because all the actors were committed to other films as well. Also, producer Henry was waiting to snap up the title Vandae Maatharam in Tamil as well," he says. The Action King doesn't have a heroine in this film, which comes as quite a surprise. "Yes, Sneha is paired opposite Mammooty," he smiles, "Though Aravind had written some romantic scenes and a few songs for me, we later realised I actually didn't need a romantic partner in this film." Sharing screen space with Mammooty, Arjun says, was an enjoyable experience and, the actor insists he didn't feel insecure in Mammooka's presence. "In fact, I feel a lot more secure working with established actors because I know the entire movie is not on my shoulders," he explains. "I've worked with several top stars like Sivaji Ganesan, Kamal Haasan and Nana Patekar. Kuruthi Punal was such a beautiful experience. It was Kamal's own production and yet, he offered me the better character," he adds. Arjun, who has Vallakottai, Maasi and Meikaan in hand, says that the shooting for Vallakottai is almost over. "It's a commercial film, like Giri. Interestingly, I have several get-ups in this film. I dress up as 'Nayagan' Kamal, 'Krrish' Hrithik and 'Pirates of the Caribbean' Depp among others to fight the villains." Playing cop and doing action roles time and again isn't tiring, he says. "Imagine Jackie Chan not doing action comedies and opting to do emotional dramas and tear-jerkers!" he shoots back. But at times, the actor says that he's open to experimenting. "I like doing films that are not my kind, but I don't want to take a risk on others' money. That's why I made Vedam. In fact, I'm planning to remake the film in Hindi myself. I've already started work on the Hindi version. I'm also working on a fresh script that questions the system of our country. I might call it Jai Hind 2," he signs off.

Shaji ready for Mammootty's Xmas flick

Though their last coming together in 'Drona' which was released last November, was more than a disaster at the Box Office, Mammootty has once again allotted his dates to Shaji Kailash, one of the hit directors a decade ago. The new project again for Aroma international, will be the Xmas release of 2010 from the star. Scheduled to start by the mid of October, the major parts of the movie will be shot in and around the capital city.

Mammootty who is presently in the sets of his first Kannada movie 'Shikaari' will have two more releases before this Shaji Kailash film in Martin Prakkat's 'Best Actor' and M A Nishad's 'Best of Luck'. While the former movie will feature the superstar in the title role, the later will have him in a cameo of a real life superstar.

Shaji Kailash who had been amidst continuous flops for his last half a dozen movies like Time, Alibhai, Sound of boot and 'Drona' will be looking for a welcome hit to recapture his lost glory in Mollywood.

Final rounds and choices

Though the year's National awards had 13 ones going for Mollywood, the film buffs are lamenting that they are fooled in the case of the Best actor selection. The thinking cine-buffs who had seen the megastar Mammootty's three films in the race for the best, is left stunned as he is now left without any decent consolations, not even a special mention. Amitabh Bachchan, the towering star of Hindi cinema who is said to have done a commendable role, playing a 12 year old boy with progeria in 'Paa' has bagged the Best Actor award.

Though Amitabh's performance need to be appreciated, many eyebrows as raised as the triple role in Ranjith's 'Palery Manickyam', and in 'Kutty Shrank' is found as inferior to that in 'Paa'.

"Amitabh Bachchan's eyes didn't even communicate with the audience in 'Paa'", says director Ranjith. The role that he displayed in Pa. is more of a wizardry of makeup man than the actor in him. "Even Sasi Kozhikode who did an important role in my film 'Pranchiyettan and the Saint' can do the role with effectiveness if the make up man did the same job on him", comments, an irritated Ranjith. The director of the best film of the year, Shaji N Karun also feels sorry for Mammootty and maintains that it was him who rightly deserved the award.

Many critics opine that it's the stature and voice of Bachchan that plays a big part in getting him an award, rather than his emotive abilities. Be it in the case of his previous 'Agnipath' or 'Black', his every award had been enmeshed in some sort of controversies, and this time too it's not much different.

The majority points out that even after delivering three best performances in a single year, one after the other, and which were truly distinct in every sense, it is a real shame for the jury to bypass Mammootty's efforts and make no notes of the versatility of an actor who was all set to land into his fourth national award, in fact thus becoming the first person to grab a fourth, of the India's highest accolades.

Apart from the Ramesh Sippy factor, this it self could be one reason that could have made the jury men to limit one of the best actor of the south, a valued accomplishment.

'Doubles' to start this November

Mammootty's next movie to start its shooting will be debutante Sohan Seenulal's 'Doubles'. The movie which will feature Mammootty and Nadia Moidhu as twins will kick of its shoot by the 15th of November at Pondicherry.

Written by Sachi-Sethu, the movie will be produced by K K Narayanadas in the banner of 'Dreams on Wheels'. P Sukumar will handle the camera for this movie which will feature Tapsee as the heroine.

Suraj Venjaramoodu, Salimkumar, Bijumenon and Anoop Chandran are also part of the cast of this movie, which will also feature songs by James Vasanthan.

Vandematharam Review...2/5

In Vandemataram, Mammootty plays Gopikrishnan who has been assigned the task of cracking down a proposed terrorist operation in South India. Arjun plays his assistant Anwar and together they get down to some serious terrorist nabbing. Gopikrishnan and Anwar spend the first half of the film tracing phone calls and chasing people around highways. A few bombs explode here and there which I believe is expected to make the situation even more tense. Gopikrishnan runs after the invisible enemy while Anwar climbs buildings and jumps off unbelievable heights.

The investigation proceeds through incredibly weird situations that would have you blinking your eyes in disbelief. For instance, there is this whole lot of time spent on a bird sanctuary, where pelicans from across the world come to roost. The officers get all perked up when they realize that the terrorists have been using more 'natural' ways to communicate with each other.

Finally, they zero in on the one terrorist who has been planning it all. They manage to capture him, but aren't able to get a confession from him. The man remains tight lipped all the while, and then somebody murmurs that psychological treatment is the only form of inquiry left. And it does see some light when the man utters his daughter's name.

I couldn't for the life of me understand what Gopikrishnan was doing in front of a television screen watching video footage of the terrorist's daughter speaking to her mom. Did he actually have some cameras installed in that remote Pakistan village and keep them under surveillance?

As for the poor terrorist, he has a sob story to tell. He has a daughter who refuses to go to school because of a stammer. And what does the terrorist, who is a father first and a dreaded criminal second do? He promises her that he will return with all the money that is required to cure her of her disability.

The final fifteen minutes of the film that has plenty of real drama thrown is unbelievably mindless. The officers attempt to create a make-believe world for the criminal and lead him onto that very important declaration of guilt. Things soon get worse as the dram gets more and more implausible. Imagine a woman officer being sent into the cell of a hardcore terrorist without even as much as a soul or a security officer around!

Mammootty has absolutely nothing to do in this film except playing the commanding officer who just has to utter commands. Arjun puts in his share of a few daredevil stunts, but the script offers him nothing either. Sneha walks in and out of the film in a cameo that's barely impressive. The three songs in the film do not serve much purpose either. They are neither hummable nor aesthetically picturised.

Vandemataram obviously has been made on an exorbitant budget. The done to death patriotic theme receives no fresh makeover in the film. If only it had paid more attention to that feeble script instead of raking up all that clatter and clamor on screen, would it have made more sense.

Vandematharam to release tomorrow.....

Is Amitabh's 'Paa' superior to Mammootty's triple feat?

The National Award declarations for the year 2009 has left lovers of good cinema stunned!

Amitabh Bachchan who did the lead role of a 12 year old boy with progeria has bagged the Best Actor award.

Amitabh has done a commendable role indeed in the film directed by Balki, but what has raised many eye brows is that he has overridden three stupendous performances by Mammootty in Malayalam.

Last year Mammootty had donned the role of Pazhassi Raja in the Hairharan directed magnum opus, had wowed critics and the public alike with his triple role in Ranjith's 'Palery Manickyam' and had delivered yet another whopping feat in Shaji N Karun's 'Kutti Srank'.

Rarely has there been such unanimous opinion among the general public when it comes to adjudging the best performances of the year. With three magnificent performances from Mammootty and with very little competition around, the actor seemed all set to win the National Award for a fourth time.

As much as Amitabh's performance is to be appreciated, it cannot be forgotten that his very role in 'Paa' speaks more of the craftsmanship of the makeup man than the histrionic abilities of the actor.

Mammootty on the other hand has delivered three best performances in a single year, one after the other, and which are as distinct from one another as possible.

It therefore remains a mystery as to what had prompted the National Award jury members to take this decision. The film-going janta would really like an answer.

Why "Pa" select, overriding Mammootty's triple impacts??

The National Award declarations for the year 2009 has left lovers of good cinema stunned! Amitabh Bachchan who did the lead role of a 12 year old boy with progeria has bagged the Best Actor award. Amitabh has done a commendable role indeed in the film directed by Balki, but what has raised many eye brows is that he has overridden three stupendous performances by Mammootty in Malayalam. Amitabh doesn't deserve the National Award: Ranjith

Director Ranjith has lambasted the National Award jury for selecting Amitabh Bachchan as the Best Actor for 2009, bypassing tremendous performances by Mammootty.

'Amitabh Bachchan's eyes do not communicate with the audience in 'Paa'. There is nothing mindblowing about his performance,' Ranjith said.

'The role in 'Paa' is nothing but the wizardry of a make up man. Even Sasi Kozhikode who did an important role in my film 'Pranchiyettan and the Saint' would do the role with equal effectiveness if the make up man did the same job on him. He even has the same height as Bachchan,' Ranjith added in jest.

The National Award declaration of 2009 is thus snowballing into a controversy as the jury's decision is considered by many as an unfair one.

Sad that Mammooty hasn't got the National Award: Shaji N Karun

Director Shaji N Karun, whose film 'Kutty Srank' was adjudged the Best Film of the year 2009 at the National Awards has commented that it's sad that Mammootty hasn't got the award for Best Actor.

'I am sorry that Mammootty hasn't got the award for Best Actor. He should have got it for his sincerity,' Shaji said, while interacting with media persons.

'I still can't believe that 'Kutty Srank' has been selected as the Best Film. I am glad that I was able to deliver the stuff in 'Kutty Srank' to the expected level,' he added.

Mammootty had lost out on the Best Actor award to Amitabh Bachchan who bagged it for his performance in 'Paa'.

I'm happy my films won eight national awards: Mammootty

Mammootty missed out on the best actor award but the Malayalam superstar says he his happy that two films he acted in - 'Kutty Srank' and 'Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja' - had bagged eight national awards between them. 'Kutty Srank' director Shaji N. Karun too said he was overjoyed.

'Honestly, I feel proud that the films I acted in have won eight awards. I feel really happy. You see my job is to act and I will keep on acting and try my best,' Mammootty told IANS over the phone from Shimoga in Karnataka, where he is shooting the film 'Shikari'.

'Kutty Srank', which is produced and distributed by Big Pictures, won five awards including the best feature; special jury; best costume designer award for Jayakumar as well as best cinematography and best screenplay (original) awards for Anjuli Shukla and P.F. Mathews-Harikrishna respectively.

Southern music maestro Illaiyaraja bagged the award for best background score for 'Kerala Verma Pazhassi Raja ', which also won the best Malayalam film award. Resul Pookutty got the best sound designer for the same film.

'Kutty Srank' saw Shaji N. Karun and Mammootty join hands for the first time. And the filmmaker is overjoyed with the string of awards.

'I am very happy as a Malayali to have got this award. I have done four films and three of my films have won the National Award and I am happy,' he said.

The film is about the story of a character (Mammootty) told from three different perspectives -- by three women he was involved with at different stages of his life.

Oscar Award winner Resul Pookutty said he is elated with the national recognition.

'The work I did for the film 'Pazhasi Raja' was different because the sound played a crucial role in the film,' said Pookutty.

Malayalam cinema is like an animal tied to a peg: Ranjith

Director Ranjith said today that Malayalam cinema is like an animal tied to a peg and which helplessly revolves around it.

The director was interacting with members of the media at the Kannur Press Club.

He said that his latest film 'Pranchiyettan and the Saint' that has opened to rave reviews, is an attempt to create something different while remaining a part of mainstream cinema.

'Done and redone themes are keeping the audience away from the theatres. I have made 'Pranchiyettan and the Saint' with the intention of interacting with the general audience in a fresh way without insulting their intelligence,' Ranjith added.

'Other language films see success in the state, not merely on account of their big budget and technical backup. They are successful because they find out stories and characters that we do not get to see, from among us,' the director said.

57th National Film Awards: Who will be the best actor?

With the 57th National Film Awards to be announced Wednesday afternoon, the question is who will win the best actor award?
Will Amitabh Bachchan catch up with Malayalam megastar Mammootty and South Indian superstar Kamal Haasan?

Mammootty and Kamal Haasan have won the national award for best actor thrice and Bachchan twice in his career.

Kamal Haasan had won the award for the Tamil film "Moonampirai" in 1983, for "Nayakan" in 1988 and for "Indian" in 1997.

Mammootty won the prestigious award in 1990 for his roles in "Mathilukal" and "Oru Vadakan Veeragatha", in 1994 for "Ponthanmada" and "Vidheyan" and in 1999 for "Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar".

Big B won the award in 1991 for "Agnipath" and in 2006 for "Hum".

So, will Mammootty become the first to win best actor award for a record fourth time?

"Acting is not about winning or losing," says Mammootty.

"I have done my job," he said. "I have just reached here and during the next two to three weeks I am going to complete my Malayalam-Kannada film 'Shikari'," Mammooty told IANS over telephone from Shimoga in Karnataka.

The veteran superstar's three films — "Pazhassi Raja", "Kutty Shranku" and "Paleri Manickam: Oru Pathirathri Kolapathakathinte Katha" — have been nominated for the National Film Awards.

The 57th National Film Awards will be presented to the best of Indian cinema released during the year 2009.

10 Most expected Malayalam film sequels 2010-2011

Malayalam film industry tried different things but nothing gives it the punch that the industry really expecting from the box-office. 2010 is not a good year for 'Moallywood' as it precipitated only 6 quality hits in 7 months, namely 'PokkiriRaja', 'In Ghost House Inn', 'Kadha Thudarunnu', 'Happy Husbands', 'Mummy & Me' and 'Paapy Appacha'. But many good movies are yet to hit the cinema halls.

The trend is actually changing from one to another. The latest and the most effective among the trends is making of the sequels to the earlier block-busters. Lal (Sidhique-Lal) successfully made two sequels to the original 'In Harihar Nagar' in successive years and this is the new trend in the Mollywood. Yes, more than half a dozen movies are going to hit our screens in the next 12 months, which are sequels of old block-busters.

1. The King & the Commissioner
After 15 years, the hit making pair Shaji Kailas and Renji Paniker combines once again to combine two of their powerful characters, Thevallyparambil Joseph Alex and the Commissioner. Shikaar Review:2/5

There are no directorial flourishes visible in Padmakumar's Shikkar that is old wine in an older bottle. As much as it remains a visual delight, the mysteries that it offers do not much thrill, and the story that it tells seldom excites.

The story of Shikkar takes place at Chittazha, a mountainous terrain where bamboo reeds flourish. After much wandering from place to place, Balraman (Mohanlal) a lorry driver has finally settled down with his daughter (Ananya) at Chittazha. Peace evades the man as his past catches up with him, and Balaraman has to take risky everything to safeguard his own life and that of his daughter's.

The story of Shikkar is as old as the first hunt on the history of the earth. Suresh Babu employs every known device in the book to bring in that extra bit of energy into the proceedings but the screenplay never reaches anywhere near excellence. Isn't it strange that the hero's lorry has been named Shikkar of all possible names on earth? And what seems even more illogical is the way a massive operation is planned by a naxalite group to murder an ordinary man who has never been known to possess any supernatural powers.

The dialogues often sound downright corny as well. When you come to think of it, there isn't a single piece of conversation in the film that you would carry back home with you. On the contrary, there is a scene when Balaraman sits beside his wife watching their daughter falling into sleep. He says it would take her some time to dream, and in the meanwhile, they (him and his wife) could dream for themselves. Off they scoot off for a dream sequence and a song!

What makes Shikkar watchable then is the way the predictable script has been depicted in an unusual way on screen. The writing and its visualisation of the film are remarkably different and this is why even the most pedestrian of scenes look arresting on film.

There are few instances in films when a technician towers above the rest of the cast and crew as in Shikkar. The real hero of the film is none other than cinematographer Manoj Pillai without whom Shikkar would have ended up mediocre fare. The camerawork of the film seems like an adventure in itself, and Manoj sees to it that the verve is pumped up through the stunning landscape even as the story fails time and again.

The role demands not much from Mohanlal the actor and neither does it offer much scope to draw out the real performer in him, but the action sequences in the climax speaks volumes of his dedication towards his profession. Tamil actor Samudrakkani cast in the role of a Naxalite is awesome as Abdulla, which makes us fervently wish the character that he played on screen had some depth to it. His role is more of a cameo and Lekshmi Gopalaswami who plays his wife does a remarkable job as well in her brief role.

If you happen to see a crowd on screen with people bashing up someone, you can very well rest assured now that the man being beaten into pulp would be Suraj Venjarammoodu. Jagathy Sreekumar joins him in Shikkar in the comic track that soon runs out of steam.

Padmakumar's Shikkar is nowhere in the league of several other successful revenge sagas that have been told and retold in Malayalam cinema. The film fails to stand apart from the rest of them on account of its immense predictability.

Ramzan films opens well

Ramzan season is all set to end the drought of viewers in theatres of the state. All the three films that opened to viewers this Friday, has made some good initial collections. Mohanlal's 'Shikaar' is all set to end up as a hit and the movie is running to house full shows in almost all of its release centres in Kerala.

While Mammootty's 'Pranchiyettan and the saint' is opined to be a fine simple movie with a different story, 'Elsamma Enna Aankutty' is said to be another vintage Lal Jose stuff with all the regular ingredients. The 210 theatres of the state make merry with these three biggies, while the rest are running recent Tamil hits in tandem.

"Best Actor' is complete
