Malayala Cinema Half Year Box office Report

The box office results in the first half of 2009 indicate that our superstars are in dilemma. In the first six months 32 films were released and four of them became hits at the box-office. Interestingly all these films made on an average budget and did not disappoint the audience. Out of this, '2 Harihar Nagar' became a block buster and producer cum director Lal made a big come to the industry. `Bhagayadevatha' is another typical Sathyan Anthikad movie which succeeded at Kerala box office. Sathyan continues as a unique director who has big business value among Kerala audience. `Makante Achan' and 'Passenger' are other two movies which made profit. When 'Passenger' was noticed by its unique way of presentation and freshness, `Makante Achan' was because of its black comedy. All the above-mentioned films were not having a big star cast on its card and still it could attract awesome crowds to theaters.

When we take the star based accounts, in short, our superstars promised much and delivered less. All their movies were much hyped in one or another way and none of them could keep their promise. Mohanlal had 3 releases. 'Red Chillies' was the first release of the year and could not make any impact. 'Sagar Alias Jacky' was the much hyped movie of the year and started with a record opening all over the Kerala. But fans euphoria evaporated soon and fell flat. Though it could make an average business but that was not enough to recover its huge production cost. 'Bhagwan' was next one and became the biggest disaster of his career. At the same time, the other super star Mammootty had only a single release, 'Love in Singapore', which became another disaster in his career. Suresh Gopi is continuing his pathetic performance at box office and `Kancheepurathe Kalyaanam' and `IG' is underlining that fact. Jayaram is the only star who can have a
sigh of relief since one of his two releases became a hit that is none other than 'Bhagyadevatha'. At the same time, his other release 'Samastha Keralam P.O' became a wash out. Dileep had only one release as hero that is Moz N' Cat, which he may not like to remember. At the same time, should be appreciated for being a part of 'Passenger' kind of movies.

From the young brigade Prithviraj, Jayasurya, and others continues to struggle and could not make any ripples at the box-office. For instance, Prithviraj's `Calender' was a family entertainer but the film somehow failed to rake in the moolah while films with bold or different themes like `Orkkuka Vallapozum,' `Bhoomi Malayalam' and `Banaras' found it difficult to get playing time in the theatres. 'Ivar vivahitharayaal' is another release which could fetch average reviews and it may turn out to be a surprise hit. 'Bhramaram' is the forthcoming big release of this month and expected to be a classic.
