Malayala Cinema 2009 Flashback

1 Keralaverma Pazhassi Raja -Blockbuster

when you look back at 2009 in terms of cinema, you can't miss Keralaverma Pazhassi Raja – The king of 2009. No film in the history of Malayalam cinema has evoked such expectations before and after release.
This is probably the first time in the long history of Malayalam cinema that a South Indian film attracted national and international attention. The film with an unprecedented budget made into the headlines of almost all national television channels.

The dream combination did work. The First venture of Sree Gokulam Films, The most noteble director Hariharn,The legendary writer M.T. Vasudevan Nair, and the undisputed king of kerala box office, Megastar Mammootty – when you have these names in a single venture, it is ought to be a great sensational and it turned out to be Mega Blockbuster exactly the same after 80's classic Oru Vadakkan Veergatha.

What made Pazhassi so special? The above mentioned combination was ably supported by amazing stunt choreography of Ravi Diwan , Illayaraja's sets for the songs were breathtaking, Sound Maestro Oscar winner Rassol Pookuty, Sarath kumar, Manoj k jayan, Padma priya, provided sensible support by their unusual performance. The way hariharn presented Pazhassi is undoubtedly one of the highpoints of Pazhassi Raja. We are not mentioning about the 'fair' Mammootty alone.

As a result of all such perfect ingredients, Pazhassi triumphed like anything and emerged as a front runner in all aspects. Mammootty proved his mettle even after 30 years of his filmdom.

2 2Harihar Nagar -Blockbuster

Loaded with Fun, the highlights of 'In harihar Nagar 2' embrace a racy script, solid performance by old comedy boys of 90's with ease propped up by the sparkling performance of Laxmi Roy.

Opened to 100% collections all across the state, and emerged as the clear winner of the Vishu race and could win rave reviews also.. '2In Harihar nagar' created a record in mollywood by completing 50 days in 47 center (direct run) in malayalam and was declared a blockbuster.

To sum up, the movie is a comedy-packed entertainer with loads of thrill, suspense, and fun. Producer turned director lal has proved his mettle as a commercial director with this film alone without siddique which paired 90's

3 Bhagyadevatha -Super Hit

Jayaram has been more than happy with this solo hit in 2009. Director Sathyan Anthikkad continued his winning streak, once gain becoming the favorites of the family with his straight narrations, localized plots and quality family sentiments. The undercurrent of humor and placement of subtle humor dialogues that seems natural at the best and the smooth transitions in the proceedings is the highlight of this Sathyan movie as well. Ilayaraja's hit songs and great performances from kaniha, Innocent, and Naren were the other highlights of the movie.

4 Puthiya Mugham -Hit

This was the first super success of Prithviraj as an independent hero. Ably supported by Priyamani, Bala, Meera Nandan, Nedumudi Venu, the film instantly become the film for the campuses. The unique storyline and a racy presentation by debutante Diphan, gave all the space to integrate all the essentials for a commercial success. Diphan shows his real smart penchant for hit-craft which he applies brilliantly to hold the flick together and present it at a lightning pace towards a jovial finish.

5 Makante Achan -Hit

Taking everyone by surprise, the film only started with average opening, it picked up tremendously with inflow of family audiences. The father son factor has worked in film's favor which is entering top 5 of 2009 and collect a decent profit one crore in long run, which completed a economical budget 1.75 crore . It is not a bad film to watch at least once, especially because it reiterates values and ideals that have been eroded. The other highlight of the movie is definitely Suhasini, who dons the female lead of a Malayalam film after a long gap


When taking a flashback of 2009, the year created some hits like Black&White kudumbam, Passenger, Ivar Vivahitharayal, Loudspeaker, Neelathamara, Gulumaal, and Bhramaram -one each to all the reigning stars of the present Malayalam cinema. At the time when we compile this article, the two big Christmas releases are just opened into theaters and their BO verdict is yet come. So, in our top 5 list, we have not included these movies.

2009 also saw the releases of at least ten films in the offbeat genre; like Orkkuka Vallapozum, Bhoomi Malayalam, Vilapangalkkappuram,Madhya Venal, Soofi Paranja Kadha , Patham Nilayile Theevandi and Oru Pennum Randaanum, which got changed without any remarkable impulse in the B O charts. And the rest was those that were single handedly considered as the mediocre middle man cinema, whose success and failure were finalized at the box office.
